2010 WELLINGTON THEATRE WRAP at Various venues
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 22 Dec 2010
Wellington theatre’s highs and lows
Some years you just know will stick in your mind, no matter how many more hundreds of shows you will see in the future. 2010 is one of those magic years. [more]

Wellington theatre in rude good health
This has not been an easy year for Wellington’s theatre critics. First, in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, Roger Rees’s Vladimir and Sir Ian McKellen’s Estragon, played as out-of-work vaudevillians, passed the time by abusing each other, thus: [more]

MUNE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY at A bookshop near you
reviewed by John Smythe 18 Dec 2010
Multi-levelled story an absolute treasure
I have a fantasy that MUNE an autobiography will be read by all Creative New Zealand and NZ Film Commission board members, CEOs and key staff members over their Christmas break, not just because it raises some key questions about the institutions they work for, but because it will reconnect them with “the clear, passionate voice of the New Zealand artist.” [more]

2010 AUCKLAND THEATRE WRAP at Various venues
reviewed by Janet McAllister & Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 18 Dec 2010
Auckland theatre’s best of 2010
Auckland theatre punters have been spoiled for choice over the past year. There were heaps of shows (at least 110 professional and semi-professional plays) and overall, they fulfilled two important get-off-the-couch criteria: they were entertaining, and cheap enough to compete with the movies. RANDOM ACTS OF GOD & OTHER STORIES: A CONTEMPORARY CABARET at The New Media Club, 195 Armagh Street
reviewed by Kerri Fitzgerald 15 Dec 2010
Daring and intelligent tangle of music and dance theatre
Corrupt Productions (a dance theatre initiative) delivers what it promises and more. Described as a ‘contemporary cabaret’, Random Acts of God is a blend of live music and quirky contemporary dance that is ‘edgy’, earthy, and downright cheeky. [more]

Parsons right on the nose
Yvette Parsons creates a Kiwi Eleanor Rigby in her haunting portrait of an elderly widow busying herself in preparation for a Christmas Day gathering that no one will attend. [more]

Harrowing hilarity earns standing ovation
Irene McMunn is a dear, doddery old biddy preparing to entertain a few guests on Christmas afternoon, after her customary morning church service. With able guidance from her director Stephen Papps, Yvette Parsons delivers a tour-de-force performance as poignant as it is parodic. [more]

MEMBERS OF OUR LIMBS at BATS

Madcap antics and zany delight
It is sheer pleasure to see this work 40 years after Theatre Action, a company of five graduates of the same Ecole Jacques Lecoq, led by Francis Batten, brought alternative theatre to new territories here in New Zealand. That was before any of these young performers was born, yet the pedigree of their school remains intact ... [more]

Emotional truth at the heart of success
We all have a clown within us; not just a child to be rediscovered in adult form but someone whose naivety, gullibility and susceptibility to strong and deep-felt emotions would come to the fore in idiosyncratic ways if certain controlling factors were subtracted from our learned strategies for survival. I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE at Basement Theatre, Te Whaea National Dance & Drama Centre

A fantastic night’s entertainment
What a great night out at the theatre! As the promotional material states – this piece is a celebration of the mating game with “everything you secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws but were afraid to admit.” [more]
