LANTERN at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 22 Apr 2009
Who or what is driving this and why?
The idea of Lantern is to use the impetus of a Chinese New Year family gathering to reveal their stories, confront their issues and thereby share something of what it is to be a New Zealander with Chinese heritage. The result is not as well crafted as it could have been. [more]

LANTERN at BATS

Problems shared under one moon
On leaving the opening night of Lantern the audience was handed a Chinese New Year gift of a chocolate dollar and an 11th century poem which ends with the lines: All we can hope for is life enough to see that though a thousand leagues apart, we all look at the same moon. [more]

Depth and warmth
Lantern is the story of a New Zealand family of Chinese ethnicity struggling to come to terms with recent changes as their mother, Rose Chen, awakens to her own dreams. [more]

Lantern sheds light on Chinese-Kiwi cultural experiences
Chinese lanterns – with an inscrutable riddle written on the outside and a flickering flame within – are the central metaphor in Renee Liang's intimate journey through the fractured domestic life of a New Zealand Chinese family. [more]

reviewed by Joanna Davies 25 May 2009
The spirit of great comedy is alive and kicking in NZ
It may be the International Comedy Festival but last night was New Zealand’s night. And what better way to wrap up the month’s laugh fest than with some awards? [more]

LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS at The Pumphouse, Takapuna
reviewed by Nik Smythe 19 Oct 2012
Real questions identified
As amusing as his hapless conduct is, Barney is, in effect, the straight man to the three successive, strongly comedic female characters, with each of whom he strives to reach beyond his staid existence in the hope of having a meaningfully spontaneous, unpredictable liaison, just once in his life. Simon's sexual revolution never simple
It is surprising that Neil Simon's vast repertoire is hardly ever staged in New Zealand. He is regarded as America's most successful playwright and his work will be familiar to local audiences through TV or movie adaptations of Broadway hits such as The Odd Couple and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Dunedin Fringe
LAST POSTCARD FROM CUBA at Arc Cafe, High Street

Rambling discourse flattens intelligent research
If you have ever wanted to spend an evening with a depressed writer who is about to blow his brains out, this is the show for you. If, on the other hand, that sounds a tad grim, I must agree. Even though the depressive is Ernest Hemingway, and he has some damn good stories to tell, the cumulative effect has one wanting to pick up the on-stage rifle and hurry the job along. [more]

LATE LAUGHS (WELLINGTON) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St

Rolling together with well warmed up comedians
A truer cross section of Kiwi comics [plus English MC] you couldn’t hope to find. Zoe Lyons worked the audience with lightning repartee. An audience as hyped as this one could have gotten out of hand but this gal knows how to get people on side and working with her. [more]
