From pop-culture dance/theatre to potent dance of unease, dissatisfaction and transformation The Late Night Show #2 explored developing choreographic expressions of some socio-political undercurrents exposed in contemporary Aotearoa. [more] |

LAUGH EXPERIENCES at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 25 Feb 2010 |

refreshingly intelligent, uncynical and quirky Chelsea Hughes, Natalie (Nat) Britten and Danni Taylor are “Little Moustache” (pronounced leetle not luttle). They are very, very funny. [more] |

A very cosy, pleasant evening The Fringe blurb tells us Laurentina is 30, single, unemployed, and still living with her parents. So she does what any sane person would do: she dabbles in witchcraft. This seems familiar territory, Bridget Jones stuff, except perhaps for the witchcraft. [more] |

The essence of dance as a living art form Looking at it - I smiled when I realised this was pure Indigenous Dance of New Zealand. It grew from the land in the same vein as produce from the Matakana markets. In our national statement to the World - do we WANT to be represented by our colonization past? Racial inequities? Political despair? Constantly referencing who we are - but really who are we?! I looked around at this community experience - being shared with the children, the adults, the family - knowing Kumeu is about as far from New York that you can get. And then, and then knowing that this piece of freshly squeezed dance is exactly what the world needs to see. Dance that sees beauty in the 'mundane' (what really is mundane actually?), dance that allows us to breathe and see (pictures of bears being drawn, dancer bodies wheeling across the floor on a moveable cushion), and also dance that references. Lovely dancing, playful subversion and poignancy In an outstanding community dance initiative, Spinning Sun is at the tail end of a tour of North Auckland townships where the company has worked with young dancers in each centre giving them the opportunity to be the curtain-raiser for the main performance. In Helensville, the delight on the young dancers’ faces is a joy to see, as they confidently perform their dance and then become highly appreciative front-row audience for the rest of the show. Poignant numbers perfectly pitched Cabaret table seating is set up in the Gryphon as well as snuggled up standard seating, the cast need to make more use of these front row audience members. Hopefully once the cast relaxes into the sheer quantity of songs and routines, more audience engagement will occur and the dialogue gain cohesion. [more] |

Eclectic showcase goes into bonus time I’m either missing something, or trying to read too much into the French title, which confuses me given there are no French acts even in the festival, let alone this show. It is none-the-less an eclectic International showcase, presented by those two foreign acts Urzila Carlson (expat South-African) and Jarred Christmas (from Christchurch). As a double act they are equally commanding, casual and crass. Quite funny too. [more] |

Empowering, intelligent, silly and very moving Like much drag, the show is as much about self-discovery and redemption as it is about reinvention and fantasy, and Le Gateau Chocolat offers up autobiographical anecdotes, both touching and hilarious, between the musical numbers. [more] |

Circus ‘highlights’ show lacks a theatrical spine While there is no denying Le Grand Cirque delivers on its promise of superb acts of contortion, acrobatic feats, and gravity-defying displays of balance and strength, I’m left with the ultimate feeling that the show is less a stamp of a new identity and more a well marketed package, that evokes reference to similar circus shows that have a theatrical backbone.
