A veritable abundance of austentatious authenticity Indeed, the ensuing on-the-spot manufacture and performance of a suddenly invented long lost manuscript of Jane Austen spontaneously named Greed and Generosity by means of lottery and audience nomination seems as familiar as Dickens and Twain. Darkly whimsical play has stood the test of time The comedic action kicks off with Mum’s waters breaking and the Freak (Catherine Waller) being born but she is steadfastly ignored as the daily routine – sleep, wake, wash, cook, eat (“Bugger off!”), work or whatever, eat, burp, bedtime (“Move!”)… – is repeated, over and over ... Inspiring view from the auditorium Peach Theatre Company presents Author Miller’s iconic play A View From The Bridge with a star-studded New Zealand cast at Auckland’s TAPAC Theatre. Despite the play having become a hackneyed high school text book in many countries around the world, Peach Theatre Company truly makes it their own in this inspired and purposeful production. Well-performed theatrical anarchy With the exception of Red Mole New Zealand theatre hadn’t really come face to face before 1985 with such theatrical anarchy as Wild Cabbage, with its outrageous parody of family life, its slapstick, its complicated word games, its repetitions, and its expressionistic staging of urban isolation. All of which are well performed by the graduating students. [more] |

Deep exploration and profound engagement not achieved ... This Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School graduation production, directed by Rachel House, is therefore very welcome, despite the necessary casting of young actors in mature roles. What is less forgivable – to get this off my chest upfront – is the casting of two actors in Kiwi male roles who are not capable of playing their roles with a credible NZ accent ... [more] |

Amusing shenanigans In the deepest bush of a remote New Plymouth farm, dastardly esoteric plans are afoot… The simple-ish and wholly unique plot resembles something of a quintessentially Kiwi, adult Badjelly the Witch, including the story-driving event of Bruce’s prize cow going missing. [more] |

Audio visual assault Four self-proclaimed ‘improvisers’ hailing from Grenoble, France, deliver a line-up of chaotic ‘performances’ – not performance in the on-stage sense I was expecting, rather the artists perform through their mediums – Gaëlle Rouard and Etienne Caire’s 16mm projectors and their accompanying live sound-on-film duo ‘Lafoxe’. Dinner party evoked through dream-like logic, comedy, disturbances, visually rich mobile tableaux … Since founding Loons Circus Theatre with some of the graduates in 2007, Friend and company have put in over 3 years of additional development on The Butler, as well as national and international touring. The result is an extremely fun – as well as quite erudite and abstract – piece which, while deeply rooted in New Circus and the work of the institutions ... has its own highly distinctive and engaging flavour [more] See also reviews by: Melissa Miles Vanessa Byrnes Matt Richens (Waikato Times); |

Clone machine gives birth to magical man There’s a simplicity and limpid beauty in Gene Pool that has been rare or non-existent amongst the shows that have made up the STAB seasons of experimental theatre in the past few years. [more] |

Brutal comedy has audience in stitches You need some kind of armour to watch this production, for it is not called God of Carnage by accident. About the only thing left standing at the end of the play was the set. [more] |
