A boundless passion for ballet Sir Jon Trimmer is arguably one of the most outstanding male ballet dancers New Zealand has ever produced. He has danced with several of the world’s greats, and in a breath of informal demonstration, moves gorgeously still, with an élan evolved out of years and years of practice and performance perfection. A range of his photos, set as a backdrop against entertaining anecdotes of performance dramas show him as technically extraordinary. [more] |

The title tells you all The ‘awkward’ brand of humour is one well known to audiences. Popularised in modern times by the Ricky Gervais School of comedy, it employs cringe, painful pauses, and a whiff of nastiness to sell its humour. Thomas Sainsbury has long done his own successful spin on the genre, and is a great match working for the first time with the Outfit Theatre Company with Director Benjamin Henson for their annual Christmas show. A pot-pourri of experiences and insights In a loud voice, interspersed with swear words that seem completely fatuous as he acts out stories of his life, this clever man spends the first half of his show hectoring his listeners, or at least that is how it feels. This is a shame as some of the audience leave within the first ten minutes, many more at the interval, and consequently they miss the best part: a softer different Joe Bennett. [more] |

Utterly delectable! Filled with detail, intricacy and beautifully directed, the evening flowed seamlessly. A far cry from the usual format, that can often feel, well, foreseeable. By contrast we were seduced with a selection of well-paced and well-timed unpredictability. Did we expect the sailor with his back to us, slowly stripping away his crisp white navy uniform revealing his tanned muscular back, to turn out to be a hot blonde? Most certainly not. Could we have anticipated the hypnotic stage presence of the only male in the show, Arian Levanael, to be a mastery of hoop and silks, so effortless, so accomplished and well, so damn sexy in leather and then in sequins? Profoundly entertaining I confess to feeling trepidation at the premise of this show: two performers only one of whom has rehearsed; the other is different every night yet plays a crucial role.
