HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK at Muritai School Hall, Eastbourne
reviewed by John Marwick 7 Dec 2006
Much to commend and some buts
There was much to praise and enjoy in the production on the floor of the Muritai School Hall at Eastbourne on Thursday. As always the characteristic energy and pace was there and it carried a good-sized audience through three hours of gripping performance ... [more]

GUYS & DOLLS at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 18 Dec 2006
Nicely dizzy despite daft ending
‘Dizzying’ is the word that springs to mind, and not just for the New York perspectives Tony Geddes delivers with his set design. We’ve heard it all before and hummed the melodies in many a circumstance, but there is still real delight in being an audience for this oldie but goodie of a 50’s Broadway show. [more]

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS at Mona Vale
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 15 Feb 2007
Energetic ensemble needs pace not speed
Al fresco Shakespeare is full of promise and equally full of likely complications. There is the prospect of seeing a play freshly in the open air, and the delight of unimpeded leg room, picnics and a generally relaxed time of it. On the other hand there are bound to be encounters with the devils of sound technology, the necessity of bolder playing than many actors have experienced onstage and of course, the weather [more]

THE SHAPE OF THINGS at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 18 Feb 2007
Startling challenge to preconceptions
Theatre goers in Christchurch have not had much excitement of late but suddenly this summer a startling and punchy play has arrived. As contemporary as tomorrow in its depiction of today’s love rituals, LaBute’s super-intelligent script dusts off the old questions about art, artists and their relationship to society as well. Under Ross Jolly’s assured direction, four young players bring them into sharp focus. [more]

RENT at Aurora Centre

A very talented line up
This brave new company invites us to view echoes of Puccini's steamy and seamy La Boheme in the context of New York, 1996. The original production was highly acclaimed, winning both Tony and Pulitzer awards. [more]

FLIGHT PATTERNS at 42 Winchester St. Lyttelton

No shortage of creative ideas
Periodically, The Clinic group emerges to enliven the local theatre scene with challenging images and enterprising ideas. The current production, now almost at the end of its season, is no exception. [more]

BOMBSHELLS at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 22 Mar 2007
Forge opens with a bang
There is nothing trepid about The Court’s intentions to stage scripts ‘that couldn’t be ignored’ in the studio space, now renamed The Forge. [more]

JOYFUL AND TRIUMPHANT at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 26 Mar 2007
Defining by confining to dining
There is an enduring sense of solidity and assurance about this play, undeniable maturity in the wry humour of the playwright’s vision and confidence in his observation of the pakeha middle class world at the time of writing. Fourteen years after it first played at The Court, his chronicle of the Bishop family still has great audience appeal. [more]

RADIO HA HA at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 28 Apr 2007
Generous risk-taking
If you have never been to a session of improvised performance and are not put off by the variable consequences of spontaneous decision making on the part of the players, you could very well have a new experience and a jolly evening out in store. In fact you could have a whole season of jolly evenings ... [more]

THE COUNTRY WIFE at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 7 May 2007
Generously laced with theatricality
Something extraordinary and wonderful is happening on the Mainstage at The Court. Extraordinary because after all the years and in the face of contemporary brutalism, this filigreed piece of theatre – William Wycherley’s The Country Wife – still packs such impact; wonderful, thanks to direction from the masterly Elric Hooper, an inspired design team and an impeccable cast.
