Eclectic showcase goes into bonus time I’m either missing something, or trying to read too much into the French title, which confuses me given there are no French acts even in the festival, let alone this show. It is none-the-less an eclectic International showcase, presented by those two foreign acts Urzila Carlson (expat South-African) and Jarred Christmas (from Christchurch). As a double act they are equally commanding, casual and crass. Quite funny too. [more] |

Empowering, intelligent, silly and very moving Like much drag, the show is as much about self-discovery and redemption as it is about reinvention and fantasy, and Le Gateau Chocolat offers up autobiographical anecdotes, both touching and hilarious, between the musical numbers. [more] |

Circus ‘highlights’ show lacks a theatrical spine While there is no denying Le Grand Cirque delivers on its promise of superb acts of contortion, acrobatic feats, and gravity-defying displays of balance and strength, I’m left with the ultimate feeling that the show is less a stamp of a new identity and more a well marketed package, that evokes reference to similar circus shows that have a theatrical backbone. A-maaazing – but not exactly an existential circus feast The circus came to town this weekend but it may not be the one you thought it was. Many people have confused Le Grand Cirque - a circus comprised mainly of Asian acrobats, produced by an Englishman - with the French Canadian outfit Cirque du Soleil, which is also headed to town this year. Many tasty treats You have to give it to the lovely ladies at Big Top Productions, they sure know how to combine some saucy moves with some sweet treats and both are certainly in abundance at Le Petit Fours. [more] |

Laughs aplenty To mark the world premiere of this specially commissioned Dave Armstrong comedy, Wanaka comes to the party with éclat, its stores festooned with red, white and blue balloons, a large percentage of its population wearing black berets, ‘Viva Le Sud!’ and ‘Mon Dieu!’ signs and badges variously displayed. On opening night (following a solitary preview in Clyde), prizes are awarded for the best French dressing (as in costume). [more] |

Fast, furious, funny As a Mainlander, the idea of the South Island having the upper hand over our northern cousins holds immense appeal. Dave Armstrong has taken this concept way beyond the old rallying call of ‘cut the cable’ to a Zealand where the South prospers under French rule, while the north is in a permanent recession largely due to having to pay ridiculously high power prices. Satire takes a poke at things Kiwi For a night out at the theatre in winter, there is nothing like a good comedy or farce to lift the spirits, and that is certainly what Dave Armstrong’s new play, Le Sud, playing at Downstage does. [more] |

Farcical, hyper-relevant, trans-dimensional satire The concept is immediately intriguing to anyone interested in our nation’s cultural heritage. Due to the French gaining the advantage in the ‘famous battle of Picton’ in 1839, Aotearoa as we know it doesn’t exist. Instead the South Island, Le Sud-Zelandais, is under French rule whilst the British have somehow retained governance of North Zealand. [more] |

‘Sud’ missile on target as an irrepressible comic fantasy Warning! On a scale of 1-10, Le Sud carries a PC-rating of minus 15. In this alternate universe, the French have succeeded in proclaiming sovereignty over part of New Zealand – its name, La Zealande De Sud ... [more] |
