BAGHDAD, BABY! at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 17 Aug 2008
Pure gold
Spontaneous applause is rare enough in contemporary theatre for it to be an important measure of successful engagement. At the opening performance of Dean Parker' shrewd satire, it sprang from an enthusiastic recognition of our staunch, if naïve, Kiwi ways, reflected in the doings of a backpacker from Napier, and the Baghdad cafe where his OE is considerably extended. THE BIRTHDAY BOY at Court One

Best to laugh, really
There is always an extra frisson hovering over the opening of a new work and a commissioned one at that. Has the faith been justified? Is the territory fresh (please, O please)? Are we provoked? Entertained? Both? Carl Nixon is a versatile writer, well positioned to meet all such challenges ... [more]

BLACKBIRD at The Forge at The Court Theatre

Horror and humanity where victim turns predator
The play that stirred audiences up at the International Festival in Wellington earlier this year, packs an even more visceral wallop in the confined space of The Forge. With feral intensity the two main actors shred the veil of discretion and distaste which usually cloaks discussion about sex with a minor and the audience is left with a new awareness of the complexities and painfulness that follow when a 40 year old man enters a physical affair with the twelve year old daughter of a friend. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at Court One

Scrambled tale delights
This holiday concoction is generously packed with the sort of thing that keeps the tiddlers happily engaged – short scenes, the appropriate mix of wacky and loveable characters, paint box fresh costumes and snappy choreography. This is not even counting audience involvement ploys and the laugh bait written in for adult attendees. The name of the game is fun ... [more]

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 19 Oct 2008
Bold and thought provoking
The strongly worded Director’s Note for this play, describes it as “a play of longing. Longing for political freedom, for sexual freedom, and ultimately a play about sacrifices made for freedoms.” Geraldine Brophy’s clear concept infuses the material of the play with an unblinking awareness of human need and the precarious nature of affection without losing the tension of cat and mouse games at the heart of the plot. DOUBLE ‘BILL’: BOTTOM'S TALE + MR & MRS THE SCOTTISH PLAY at Performing Arts Centre, Aranuui High School

Wonderfully diverting
On offer, should you need time out to laugh, are two polished bits of buffoonery. [more]

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 23 Nov 2008
Emotional riches ping a nerve ending
Applause will be long and heartfelt for this choice if the standing ovation that erupted on the opening night is anything to go by. The team of Rasmussen and Marrett has done it again, with a cherry on top! [more]

FRIENDS FOREVER at Court One

Nimble trio’s fun and games with unobtrusive moralizing
All razzle dazzle by night with the gorgeous excesses of La Cage, by day the stage at Court is catering for a very different audience and twinkle rather than glitz. It is, however a very engaging twinkle and good value, with no fewer than five stories all contributing to the friendship theme. [more]

THE NAVIGATORS at Victoria Square
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 25 Jan 2009
Dazzling accomplishment cleverly laced with true theatre
With the Buskers' Festival in full swing' audiences can afford to be ruthlessly selective as to where they lean or recline. To the credit of this enterprising group of circus acrobat-artists from Wellington (lucky Wellington), the big lawn was comfortably full for the performance I attended. [more]

HONOUR at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 22 Feb 2009
Clever, penetrating analysis of head v heart drama
What happens when, without obvious warning, an older man leaves his wife of many years for a younger woman? The situation has been combed over so often in various media and in real life that it could all seem a little threadbare without the vigorous debate played out with conviction and style in this production.
