ANGELS at Aranui High School
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 18 Jul 2009
Voices of Pasifika women: musical, comical, thought-provoking
The story is set as preparations for a 30th birthday party are gathering momentum in a foster mum's bright living room, whose décor speaks of faith and family. Set into the walls are cupboards of various shapes and sizes, which as they are opened, trigger memory sequences ... [more]

SLAVA'S SNOW SHOW at Isaac Theatre Royal
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 24 Jul 2009
Liberated audience lingers on
The venerable splendour of this theatre has been witness to audience responses of all sorts over its long history, but surely none more liberated than the one sparked by Slava's fabulous show. The whole auditorium becomes a playground of 'snow' and giant coloured balls ... [more]

FOUR FLAT WHITES IN ITALY at Court One

Theatre of reassurance
Well, he's done it again. Roger Hall's unerring ability to combine affectionate social comment, characters we recognise as Us and circumstances where sharp one-liners pop up as naturally as breathing – all this finds fresh expression in his latest sure fire contribution to theatre coffers. [more]

MAMMA MIA! at Westpac Arena
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 11 Sep 2009
Unfamiliar depth of familiar songs delivers infectious exhilaration
What better show to set the pulses racing in spring than this sunny smash hit of a musical, adding far flung Aotearoa to the list of simultaneous productions pumping out all over the world. For this zesty recapturing of irrepressible ABBA music plays, we are told, to 17,000 people a night ... [more]

A TRUE ACCOUNT OF THE REGRETTABLE CIRCUMSTANCES AND MYSTERIOUS DEMISE OF EDGAR ALLAN POE at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 12 Sep 2009
Entertained by Poe’s predicament
When the imagination of well-know improviser turned playwright Jeff Clark connects with the tormented mind of the nineteenth century's master of macabre poetry - once described as "three fifths genius and two fifths sheer fudge" - expect something out of the ordinary. [more]

THE UGLY DUCKLING at Court One

A generous helping of theatre fun
The story of the reject runt’s triumphant transformation into a thing of beauty and grace endorses all that good advice about being patient and good tempered at the same time as it offers plenty of opportunities for meeting a cavalcade of zesty new characters while we wait for the spring and new feathers to sprout. Director Ross McKellar and the Court team have a lot of fun too. [more]

BACKSTAGE at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 31 Oct 2009
An absolute blast
Once this play sparks into action, the pace is merciless, riding on wave after wave of appreciative laughter. As a world premier, the production adds a particularly scintillating twinkle to the year at The Court and another ‘do not miss’ tag to the work of this increasingly popular playwright ... [more]

ANYTHING GOES at Court One

A spirit lifter
Sandra Rasmussen as director/choreographer and Richard Marrett as musical director deliver another sizzler. Their understanding of what lights up a contemporary audience charges the whole event, recapturing the slightly delirious abandon of a show where the plot just stops while dance and song have their way. PROMETHEUS BOUND at Old Queen’s Theatre, 120 Hereford St
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 13 Dec 2009
A strong message for a modern audience
Across the gulf of time and culture from fifth century BC Greece to the no frills starkness of this inner city relic, the power of the playwright, whoever he was, (modern scholarship apparently now challenges the authorship of Aeschylus) still holds an audience and teases the mind. [more]

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 19 Jan 2010
Exuberant, delightful, versatile cast
Time again for the frankest audience of all to test the ability of their theatre elders to engage them in the special delight of staged story telling. On that score, this production would have to be rated a neatly crafted success, sharpening up the old story with bright characters and providing a suitably collaborative ending ... [more]
