CABARET at The Garden Club, 13b Dixon Street
reviewed by John Smythe 14 Oct 2010
Sally’s flight from life supports Life Flight
The intimacy of The Garden Club, with its bar up the back, suits the cabaret setting very well, avoiding the ‘big stage musical’ feel and harnessing, instead, the sense of a tawdry little dive in a Berlin side street as, in 1930, that city descends into the darkness brought by the rise of the Nazi Party. TE RADAR’S EATING THE DOG at Burns Hall
reviewed by Ben Blakely 14 Oct 2010
History made exciting, hilarious and inspiring
Sometimes it seems that with such a small history, New Zealand doesn’t have much to offer the historical record but Te Radar certainly proved this school of thought wrong. We need not look overseas for stars in history, we have our very own. [more]

PESO MEDIO at Kings & Queens, Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Alexandra Kolb 14 Oct 2010
Palpable eroticism and admirable stamina
It has always proven a challenge to translate the tango, which as a popular dance of embrace was born in Buenos Aires and Montevideo between 1860 and 1890, into choreographic images showcased on stage. One of the tricky aspects is the need to convert a face-to-face positioning between the partners into more audience-friendly formations ... [more]

reviewed by Sharon Matthews 14 Oct 2010
Provocative and moving
Now is the winter of our artistic isolation, made glorious summer by this Otago Festival, as we finally experience those productions that we (I) have read about from afar! (sorry, William). [more]

BACK OF THE BUS at Regent Theatre Foyer
reviewed by Kasey Dewar 13 Oct 2010
Innovative choreography, high energy dance and emotional connection
Three main characters played by Sacha Copland, Rosanne Christine and Natalie Hona take turns to portray their individual stories throughout the bus journey and at specially selected locations. Each character is perhaps an over-exaggerated version of the everyday bus passenger ... [more]

FIND ME at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave

Lost, adrift and unsure
Human animals; we’re a strange breed. So overly complicated that even we, the most dynamic and intelligent organisms on our planet, cannot figure ourselves out. [more]

NZ Opera take note: New stars rising at NZSM
Two vulnerable women trapped in a haunted, incest-poisoned house sounds like the plot for a horror movie. But Benjamin Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw can out-spook Hollywood when done well. [more]

L’ORFEO at Mayfair Theatre
reviewed by Helen Watson White 13 Oct 2010
The more powerful for being unforced
Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi’s 1607 opera of the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was a notable first, in a climate of innovation crystallised in the term ‘New Music’. In an exciting new development, chord progressions were replacing the contrapuntal weaving of musical lines familiar in the great church masses of composers like Palestrina. [more]

Definitely a winner
Y CHROMOSOME packed a punch with its vitality, variety and powerful male performances, closing the two week tempo dance season at TAPAC on a real high. It is inspiring to see young men at the beginning of dance careers share the stage with very seasoned performers. [more]
