LIVE AT SIX at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 16 Apr 2012
YouTube, TV news make fine theatre
The vagaries of the internet are at the heart of yet another play opening this week, Cuba Creative’s Live At Six at Downstage Theatre. YouTube is the culprit this time; displaying pictures to the world of TVNZ news reader and “mother of the nation” Jane Kenyon (Jessica Robinson) falling on her face in a drunken stupor at a media awards after-show party. Dream media roles
This previous 2009 Bats STAB commissioned satire that turns the tables on the media, has been updated for 2012 and it’s striking how technology has surged ahead in just a few years. Smartphone users even get to contribute to the production during the pre play set up in the bar. [more]

LIVE DRAWING: A PORTRAIT OF THE MONA LISA at Medici Court, Hamilton Gardens
reviewed by Gaye Poole 28 Feb 2012
Wordy, informative and often humorous
The main conundrum of Tasca’s play is how can Mona Lisa’s ambiguous and mysterious qualities be conveyed in such a wordy script? In it, Mona Lisa becomes absolutely reachable, attainable. [more]

LIVE LIVE CINEMA: CARNIVAL OF SOULS at Mercury Theatre

A wonderful thing to experience
I’m disinclined to agree with the “best film I’ve never seen” claim ... But the live soundtrack – a newly composed score for a seven piece orchestra, foley-delivered sounds, vocalisation and enacted script - is certainly a wonderful thing to experience [more]

Exhilarating romp into B-grade horror will scare even the tough
Being a wuss, I took along a cool, unflappable companion to this 1962 B-grade horror which screens with live music, live dialogue and live sound effects. But even her nerves of steel failed, and at one point we clutched each other and screamed like teenagers. [more]

LOBBY HERO at Silo Theatre

Drama, laughs and something to chew on
Set entirely in an apartment building lobby, Jeff the chatty and somewhat gormless doorman and his officious supervisor William are joined by cynical cop Bill and his admiring rookie Dawn. As each character is added to the mix, complications arise, each struggling with how to present the truth, or whether to cover it up altogether. [more]

Over-stated salaciousness subverts strong idea
Yet again what’s good about Sam Fisher’s play writing is subverted by misjudgements in directing, some performances and some of the writing, plus amateurish production values and presentation. [more]

Deceit in Realty
The original title of this play, Real, had to be changed for legal reasons, which is a shame as it gives a much better indication of the subject than Location, Location. [more]

free flowing, energised production
Sam Fisher’s new play Location, Location is, as the title suggests, about the real estate industry. And not just the bad side, as Fisher cleverly balances the sleaze of the industry, through the character of John (Phil Darkins), with Andrew ( Todd Rippon) – a new age sensitive guy who is left to pick up the pieces after John does a runner with the company’s trust funds. LOIN... (FAR...) at Bruce Mason Centre
reviewed by Raewyn Whyte (NZ Herald) 4 Mar 2011
A body's legacy of the past
French dancer-choreographer Rachid Ouramdane's multimedia performance installation Loin ... (Far ... ) is a very personal meditation on the nature of identity and the ways in which it is shaped by violence, aggression, war, politics, destruction, and by the legacies of the past we carry with us, especially in our bodies.
