THE GURU OF CHAI at Theatre Royal
reviewed by Moreen Eason & John Jefferies 8 Sep 2010
Pure magic
The Indian Ink Theatre Company’s productions remind one somewhat of Dr Who’s Tardis – apparently small on the outside, but inside, an entire world awaits. [more]

DISTRACTION CAMP at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 8 Sep 2010
Driven to Distraction
On the day of the Christchurch earthquake, this visiting Christchurch Free Theatre company were the epitome of the saying ‘the show must go on’. They were all affected to some degree by what had happened, and added a brief but valid reference to the earthquake. The cast were highly charged rather than distracted ... [more]

DOORS. WALLS. AND ALSO SILENCE. at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 8 Sep 2010
Effective alienation
“You’re always outnumbered, always just one person. That’s how life is.” This devised work is all about the sense of alienation many, if not most, feel at some stage. It also reminds those of us well out of our teens and 20s, of the dual pressure on young people – to conform to social ‘norms’ while figuring out who the hell we are as individuals. [more]

THE GRUFFALO at Opera House
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 7 Sep 2010
Simply charming and funny
Unlike the vociferous and excited youngsters who filled the stalls of The Opera House at the second of three hour-long showings of The Gruffalo on Saturday, I didn’t know ‘there’s no such thing as a gruffalo’ until one sat down right in front of me. [more]

MY FIRST TIME at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 7 Sep 2010
Slick show goes on too long, unlike its theme
For the first night of My First Time there was a much younger and more animated audience than is usual for a Circa opening night; as a friend commented, they could probably still remember their first time. [more]

DOORS. WALLS. AND ALSO SILENCE. at BATS

Cryptic and claustrophobic
Doors. Walls. AndAlso Silence is a 90 minute-long piece of dark, claustrophobic theatre devised by the company called My Accomplice. Loneliness and the unimportance of the individual in modern life are the play’s themes and they are visually underlined by six doors, which also act at times as paper-thin walls. [more]

Intoxicating family cocktail
Suicide, sex abuse, drugs: dysfunctional clan gets to deal with all modern ills Touted as the future of American theatre, Tracy Letts' play has been an international sensation since its Chicago opening in 2007. It arrives on the Auckland stage with an enormous burden of expectation but more than lives up to the hype with a production that is hugely entertaining and emotionally riveting. [more]

MY FIRST TIME at Circa One

Losing it together
My first time was Off Broadway ... It was a largely sedentary, repetitive, sort of plastic-coated experience of which I soon tired … But if My First Time … has a moral, it is not to let a disappointing first time taint the times that follow. This Ross Jolly-directed rendition … is richer in every respect. [more]

ANTIQUES ROGUE SHOW at Rossburn Reception Centre, Rangiora
reviewed by Kirsty Gillespie 5 Sep 2010
The show goes on: Complementary skills make the most of the format
Inspired by a scene concept performed at Scared Scriptless in 2006, Patrick Duffy and Greg Ellis saw the potential to develop the Antiques Road Show theme further, thus creating the fully fledged long format improv show that it is today. [more]

The impassioned rage of foiled love
Colin McColl’s visionary direction of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer prize winning script, as performed by his stellar cast in this NZ debut, carries us through three and a quarter hours of harrowing comedic drama to a standing ovation and leaves the audience buzzing with excitement. [more]
