CYNTHIA FORTITUDE’S FAREWELL - HER FIRST at Soundings - Te Papa
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 17 Oct 2007
Operatic balls-up
Cynthia Fortitude’s first farewell is certainly deserving of a sequel. This mix of operatic comedy, semi-dignified slapstick and love narrative, ceremoniously accompanied by a chamber orchestra ... [more]

ARCADIA at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 22 Oct 2007
relentless – if beautiful – discussion of ideas
With its large cast and abundant female roles, Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece Arcadia is an apt choice for the graduating class of Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School. This almost gratuitous intellectual work explores wide and ranging ideas ... [more]

SETTLING at BATS
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 27 Oct 2007
Visceral and humorous experience in-progress
It’s not just an entertaining change when someone produces a piece of theatre that is experimental and challenging – it’s a long held sigh of relief. [more]

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 3 Dec 2007
Funny send-up and gutsy performances
A gaudy, vibrant and somewhat cynical script gave the Downstage cast and crew of Urinetown plenty to play with opening night. [more]

SOME GIRL(S) at Circa One
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 13 Sep 2008
Flashy and ‘youth’ orientated
Neil LaBute has a reputation for ‘seeing the truth’ in our modern world. In Some Girl(s) I’m not sure I buy his interpretation of the modern values-crisis, or see it as particularly revealing. The characters he presents centre stage are often so borderline in the choices they make that what we are shown ends up more as a representation of LaBute’s own values than an ‘objective’ critique of modern Man (and indeed, despite the presence of female characters, these plays are very much focused on the male psyche). U GOT BUSH! at BATS
reviewed by Melody Nixon 22 May 2009
Large cast odd-ball Bush could be trimmed
Gorgeous Madonna Malaeulu is our geisha-like narrator on the journey through the kooky mix of U Got Bush! by the Bush collective. We’re not talking George W. here, nor any kind of tree. The three shows that make up U Got Bush! – Mammalian Love, Speedmating for Native Girls, The Randa Maz Chat Show – are all defined by sex ... [more]

CORNER 4AM AND CUBA at BATS
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 15 Apr 2007
Sensitive but shocking
In this powerful and moving piece of drama presented by the Wheelbarrow Group, Ronald Trifero Nelson directs a cast of eight young people to explore a seemingly pointless death and offer theatre as therapy. It contains violent content that may offend, and will certainly disturb, and notices in the foyer recommend counselling services to those who want to talk about issues raised by the performance. UNCLE VANYA at Circa One
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 7 May 2007
More philosophic than active
CHEKHOV is known as one of those playwrights whose work you feel you really ‘should’ see. Susan Wilson directs a performance that you actually want to see ... [more]

ENNIO MARCHETTO at Opera House
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 2 Aug 2007
Cabaret, drag, mime, and vaudeville
Lights, music, action! Tonight Matthew, I’m going to be... absolutely fabulous, darling! Knowing very little about him, I didn’t know what to expect from Ennio Marchetto. What I, and a very appreciate audience got was an hour of fast-paced, high-energy performance ... [more]
