YOUNG & HUNGRY FESTIVAL OF NEW THEATRE 2010, AUCKLAND at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Joanna Davies 10 Jul 2010
Check out one or three before the season ends
Now in its 16th year Young & Hungry is going strong. It provides an opportunity for young people to develop their theatre skills with the guidance of leading practitioners, and over the years it has produced more than 50 original plays. This is the second year the Festival has been run in Auckland and already it’s gaining momentum. [more]

YOUNG & HUNGRY FESTIVAL OF NEW THEATRE 2010, WELLINGTON at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 10 Jul 2010
We are all the richer for this experience
Maybe it’s because Young & Hungry in Wellington has turned 16 that sex is the common element in this year’s trio of very different plays. And there is more to them all than that. [more]

SWAN LAKE ON ICE at St James Theatre
reviewed by Ann Hunt (The Dominion Post) 9 Jul 2010
Spirited ice show enchants crowd
The young child next to me sat entranced on the edge of her seat and whispered: “It’s so beautiful!” And it was. This enchanting production captures all the magic of the original ballet and adds theatrical punch and psychological depth. There are changes to the scenario, which work well in this context. [more]

CARMEN at Aotea Centre at THE EDGE®
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 9 Jul 2010
Barefoot in Rio with absolutely no bull
Abigail Boyle, in a surprise appearance on Auckland’s opening night, which is usually played by the “A” cast with its leading stars, is absolutely, lusciously, dangerously Carmen. She just so looks the part - long of limb and statuesquely sexy - and makes the absolute most of her physical attributes with a perfect theatrical sensibility. [more]

I AM A CAMERA at Gryphon
reviewed by John Smythe 9 Jul 2010
More ‘depth of field’ required
I suspect what attracted attention, at its 1951 stage debut, was its depiction of the loose moral lifestyles of a hedonistic showgirl and a penniless writer, both escapees from morally cloying England, plus a flamboyant American millionaire with a taste for opium, set against the early days of the Nazi uprising in an economically collapsing Germany, between the wars. THE INTRICATE ART OF ACTUALLY CARING at Telecom Playhouse Theatre, WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Mark Houlahan 8 Jul 2010
The search for secular sainthood?
FUEL FESTIVAL 2010 It was a cold and rainy week. Two boys from Wellington bought their stylish road play to Hamilton. Meanwhile, back in Wellington, Ian McKellen bought his own fame back to Wellywood to stage Waiting for Godot, the biggest road play of them all. [more]

SALON at Patrick’s Hairdressing, Ward St
reviewed by Mark Houlahan 8 Jul 2010
Salon soap
FUEL FESTIVAL 2010 Salon was a welcome local attempt at exploiting the theatre potential of non-traditional theatre spaces. A salon is a great choice: so much potential for narcissism and display. The hot lights, the big mirrors. Everything is on display. [more]

GNOME ON THE ROAM! at Circa Two
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 8 Jul 2010
A unique holiday show
Many gardens have a gnome sitting among the flowers and shrubs but few would have one like Norman the Gnome, the central character of the Improvisors show Gnome on the Roam. [more]

THE ADVENTURES OF ALADDIN at Gryphon
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 8 Jul 2010
Song and dance routines delight
In this version Aladdin is trying to be a recognised hip-hop dancer. However, he is not very good and even the lithe Princess Jewell has her work cut out teaching him the basic steps. [more]

SWAN LAKE ON ICE at St James Theatre

Escapism of the highest order
The standards of artistic excellence of this production of Swan Lake on Ice have remained at a very high level in the interval of four years since it was first performed in Wellington. [more]
