Sets the audience rocking and howling with laughter Just as we are studying the accompanist, Cynthia makes her grand entrance. With the poise of Coco Chanel she glides up the aisle to Mendelssohn’s Bridal March. She talks to the audience with British Received Pronunciation, shaking hands and beginning to share with us the stories of her illustrious life and adventures singing opera around the globe. [more] |

Seeing our input come alive offers special satisfaction A gnome alone at home is likely to get bored, as does Norman, perched on the edge the goldfish pond at the bottom of the Ambrewsters’ garden at 22 Fictitious Place Wellington. But when he is taken on holiday – to become the subject of novelty gnome photos on Facebook – the planned trip to Auckland goes awry and he ends up … in Antarctica at the show I see, thanks to the small boy in front of me. Bright and innovative In a welcome progression from the hyped-up fairy tales so often encountered for the school holiday seasons, Dan Bain has led the charge into the demanding but rewarding world of wordless theatre. Himself a graduate of Circoarts, he has assembled this piece for three clowns of paintbox colours and vibrancy. [more] |

Someone organise a petition! It is my painful duty (this is so hard; I have been in denial all day) to announce the demise, the disintegration, the end of The Lonesome Buckwhips. The announcement of their disbanding was the sting in the tail of their last ever (yes, I’m assured it’s no joke) crack-up show, at their one-off Downstage Soundstage engagement last night. [more] |

'Duckling' delivers on message, style and fun-factors The core message of the Ugly Duckling tale – “Don’t judge a book by its cover” – comes through loud and clear in Rob Ormsby’s free adaptation, which cleverly links the young outcast with oddballs and misfits from classic folk tales. [more] |

Totally entrancing After some five years a whole new group of youngsters is able to delight in the wordless magic to be found in Boxes. In essence, in revealing a tale of two puppets – Bernie and Elton – who emerge from their boxes to set up house only to find they are in the same space, the show distils the importance of accepting diversity. Furry fun Cats get away with murder don’t they? Literally in fact – as well as being one of humanity’s favourite, most dearly loved household pets, they are one of nature’s most efficient killing machines. Greedy Cat thankfully stops short of demonstrating this (though he surely has his eye on that goldfish…); nonetheless he does get away with basically everything he does, most of which is naughty.
