RAYBON KAN: THE DISCOMFORT ZONE (NZ) at The Garden Club, 13b Dixon Street
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 12 May 2010
Politics, observational comedy, cheap gags and smut
Raybon Kan is an old hand at stand up, and though he seems slightly tired on opening night, he maintains complete confidence in the face of an oddly reticent audience. [more]

CORBETT & EGO LIVE: RADIO (NZ) at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 12 May 2010
Close – very close!!
Not surprisingly, Jeremy Corbett and Paul Ego have produced the perfect night out for people who love commercial radio. Slightly too ‘in house’in its current form to reach a broad audience, these two experienced giants of the airwaves, telly and stand up comedy circuit have the undeniable talent and craft to build this entertaining yet under-rehearsed two-hander into an extremely funny play. JOEL SALOM’S GADGETS at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 12 May 2010
Vibrant, inventive and hugely entertaining
Joel Salom comes to comedy from a Circus Oz juggler and ‘funny man’ background, to which he adds an ingenious talent for creating electronic gadgets – hence the title of his show. [more]

CLAYTON CARRICK-LESLIE: BRING IT (NZ) at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Sian Robertson 12 May 2010
Generous and multi-talented
Clayton Carrick-Leslie is charmingly self-deprecating as he shares with us the trials and tribulations of primary school, and confides in us about his fear of supermarkets. [more]

JARRED FELL: DANGEROUS IDEAS (NZ) at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Sian Robertson 12 May 2010
Magical blend of comedy, shock-tactics and gore
When Jarred Fell hit on the brilliant idea of combining magic and comedy, he conjured up a gem. As he tells us at the start, it’s not real magic, it’s comedy magic – it’s about the jokes. [more]

BURLESQUE AS YOU LIKE IT – THE BLUSH REVIEW at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall
reviewed by Megan Smith 12 May 2010
Fun, talent and energy sans je ne sais quoi
Red stocking legs dangling mid-air, a sexy female singer wearing a red sequinned lace dress drapes seductively over a black shiny piano, a trio male chorus support her breathy Eartha Kitt rendition…. what a delightful beginning! [more]

JUSTINE SMITH IN JUSSI TOWN (NZ) at The Garden Club, 13b Dixon Street
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 12 May 2010
A bevy of self-deprecating biographical material
Strong, brave, stroppy and not to be f##ked with, Justine Smith is a thinking-on-her feet-turning-mistakes-into-gags-working-the-crowd kind of comedian I really get off on. In her Wellington opening gig so did the audience. [more]

JEFF GREEN: CRAZY FROM THE HEAT (UK/AUS) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Priyanka Bhonsule (Hutt News) 11 May 2010
Sex and Australia hit the mark
It’s difficult not to like the guy – Green is that friend you meet up with every now and then at the pub who always has funny anecdotes to tell you and before long you’re saying, ‘Go on then, tell us one more.’ [more]

TOM WRIGGLESWORTH’S OPEN RETURN LETTER TO RICHARD BRANSON at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Priyanka Bhonsule (Hutt News) 11 May 2010
Good Samaritan story a stand out
It is a real shame Wellington doesn’t get to see Jason Cook’s new show, Fear!, due to his sudden return to the UK. But rest assured Tom Wrigglesworth is more than a worthy replacement. [more]

HORSEPLAY at Maidment
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 10 May 2010
Absurd, rambunctious literary romp
Horseplay is rambunctious and humorous, full of drink and literary allusions with a touch of rural gothic horror (cue screechy violins). This is all satisfyingly suitable for a play depicting a fictitious chance meeting between The Scarecrow writer Ronald Hugh Morrieson and poet James K Baxter – two of New Zealand literature's most charismatic, maverick, alcoholic bawds.
