SOUTHSIDE COMEDY 2010 (NZ) at Telstra Clear Events Centre, Manakau
reviewed by Venus Stephens 1 May 2010
We leave a few worries lighter
Southside Comedy has a sizeable venue to cater to the multitude of Comedy enthusiasts out to laugh off the week’s stress and trials. Host, Billy T Award Winner Mike Loder, has the audience onside with his ‘lovely radio voice’, vocal pot shots and clever one-liners. [more]

TE RADAR’S EATING THE DOG at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2010
Riveting hilarity
Once again Andrew ‘Te Radar’ Lumsden, now famous from the telly, excavates a veritable mine (field) of the kind of gritty, determined, certifiable lunatics and hapless, well-meaning morons that he believes are the backbone of what makes New Zil’nd the nation it is today. [more]

THE SUBURBAN MURDER at Galatos
reviewed by Joanna Davies 30 Apr 2010
When evil hides in plain sight
There’s been a murder ... And all hell breaks loose in a Shortland-Street-meets-Desperate-Housewives-style play where neighbours distrust each other, secrets bubble to the surface, and fear feeds a mob mentality [more]

BEST OF THE FEST 2010 at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 30 Apr 2010
Weekly guess always a bargain
We are not told expressly who has chosen these comedians to be ‘the best’, but the evening functions largely as a pleasant 90 minutes of advertising as most give us titbits from their respective solo shows in the hope that we’ll be tempted to come along for the full serving. [more]

HOLMES ALONE! (NZ) at Circa Two
reviewed by Hannah Smith 29 Apr 2010
Sparks off audience from solid grasp of source material and vernacular
A one man hour long improv show is an ambitious project, and I must admit that beforehand I had concerns regarding how on earth it was going to work. My fears were needless. Greg Ellis is as excellent an improviser as Sherlock Holmes is a detective. [more]

PULP COMEDY – THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL at The Powerstation, 33 – 35 Mt Eden Rd
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 29 Apr 2010
A largely mainstream comedy cocktail
... Of course content reflects age and maturity: rookies who were building their routines on moving to the big bad city and socially awkward situations, now talk about their wives; and the old hands talk about… well, being old. Plus there’s now a flood of material about kids and parenting. [more]

JAV JAQUIN: THE LEGEND OF THE CARD NINJA (NZ) at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 29 Apr 2010
Laugh and/or be impressed
Javier Jarquin’s Legend of the Card Ninja is a confident and slick combination of his impressive card tricks and his showman’s stand up. [more]

THE GLORIOUS SKY AWESOMES at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 29 Apr 2010
Pie-in-sky look at space race
There’s funny ha-ha and there’s funny peculiar. The Glorious Sky Awesomes hasa bit of both but it’s mostly funny peculiar because it seems strange to me that time has been spent on telling a crazy, fantastical, and pie-in-the-sky version of the Russian and American space race in the 50s and 60s without making any satirical point about either the race or the competitors or indeed anything at all. CAMERON PINCHEY MURRAY: I WON A T-SHIRT ONCE at Club Ivy, The Garden Club, 13B Dixon St
reviewed by Suzanne Edwards 28 Apr 2010
About perspective and perception
His style is very dry and while the warm crowd encourages, and shrieks in places, his confidence appears to slip and his manner, and his throat, gets ever dryer. [more]

STEVE WRIGLEY @WRIGGLEMANIA at The Garden Club, 13b Dixon Street
reviewed by Suzanne Edwards 28 Apr 2010
Charmingly disturbing
... an engaging and energetic show that has the crowd smiling, laughing and participating in a manner that even Steve didn’t expect. [more]
