MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER at Gryphon
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 19 Feb 2013
Simple, quirky
A howling wind (excellent sound effects throughout by Charlotte Crone) and a nervous sensibility puts the prim Frau Agniszka on edge as she serves tea to her visitor. [more]

MY BEAUTIFUL DISASTER at Gryphon

A very unnatural disaster
Authenticity, relateability and sincerity are key, even if there is no positive outcome or catharsis allowed. Accurately representing the condition is crucial, if the goal of the performance is to ask (as the play in question literally asks): “Can you understand? Have you ever felt this way?” [more]

MY BOYFRIEND GOT A BEATLE HAIRCUT at BATS - Out Of Site - Cnr Cuba & Dixon
reviewed by John Smythe 10 Mar 2013
Insightful edification
A brief clip of Debbie Reynolds singing the theme song in Tammy establishes the influence of Hollywood musicals but it’s photos of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and their manifestation from the clothes rack as Rochelle’s mentors that give us access to “goody two-shoes” Rochelle’s aspirations. MY BRILLIANT DIVORCE at Downstage Theatre

Insightful, moving and very funny
Ginette McDonald the actor, leading lady, character-actress, comedienne, public speaker and entertaining raconteur all come together here to share the painfully funny experience of Angela Kennedy Lipsky’s three year journey from broken marriage to divorce. [more]

Even in divorce there’s comedy
Ginette McDonald and Downstage are on to a winner with Geraldine Aron’s very funny light comedy about the tragedy of middle-aged loneliness. [more]

Brilliant McDonald
This is an endearing solo play about a woman, reluctantly divorced, trying to cope with being alone despite her frustrations with her husband. It’s a play that will resonate with many, and even if you’re in a happy ever after relationship, or happily alone, there are more than enough laughs to keep you entertained. [more]

Delightful streak of mischief saves naïve vulnerability from being maudlin
Divorce is not part of my life-experience. It is all too easy, however, to find a divorced friend to check the veracity of Geraldine Aron’s one-woman play. “Oh yes,” she assures me, “I’ve got a whole diary filled with all that, except that it lacks the humour which makes the play so lovely.” So real, she says, all those silly little things, like who gets custody of the married friends. “It’s like being taken back there, but this time being able to laugh.” [more]

Charm, comic skill in one-woman show
Dumped. It happens to women all the time, but when Angela's husband ditches her for a succession of younger women she's no better prepared than most. With sudden singleness come loneliness and a heap of other miseries: money worries, awful jobs, solitary attempts at holidays, social insecurity, disastrous dates, gruesome seductions and glimpses of a bleak and unloved future. MY BRILLIANT DIVORCE at Downstage Theatre

Conveniently packaged for mass consumption
My Brilliant Divorce is a one woman play that tells the story of Angela Kennedy Lipsky, recently ditched by her husband in favour of a younger, more exotic model. It ostensibly tells of her struggle through the first few years of ‘singledom’ after spending the majority of her adulthood identified as wife and mother. I think it is supposed to be empowering. Personally I thought it was the opposite. [more]

Divorce diva
When is a play not a play? The question is rhetorical, but I’ve been asking it ever since seeing (and thoroughly enjoying) My Brilliant Divorce at Downstage. What is troubling about Geraldine Aron’s witty, highly entertaining “play” is that I don’t think it is one. Described by one overseas reviewer as “stand-up tragedy”, My Brilliant Divorce is, right from the start, closer to the tradition of stand-up than that of drama. [more]
