CLAYTON CARRICK-LESLIE: BRING IT (NZ) at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 28 Apr 2010
Gymnastic mind, chiselled perceptions, energetic physicality, astute characterisations and considerable musical talents
From a tirade against Auckland wanker one-upman-ship, to his mother’s speech peculiarities, to cops, to NZ versions of reality TV shows, to the wrinkly brigade coming to terms with email, he rattles along at a cracking pace that keeps us engaged and laughing. [more]

THE GLORIOUS SKY AWESOMES at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 28 Apr 2010
Deserves further development
In a change of pace from the standup fare that is dominating the Comedy Festival, last year’s winners of Two Day Plays Draft 2 – Nic Gorman and Paul Glubb – have fabricated a tangled and twisted yarn about how Yuri Gagarin and John Glenn became the first Russian (and first man ever) and first American to orbit the Earth. Wit, insight and self-deprecation
Is This It? is James Nokise’s is the third instalment of a trilogy in which he uses stand up to try and understand watershed events in his life and his relationship to others. [more]

2010 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at Isaac Theatre Royal
reviewed by Kerri Fitzgerald 27 Apr 2010
Delivers on promise with remarkable vigour
We are treated to three substantial pieces that show off the dancers’ technical virtuosity and demonstrate the artistic flair of the choreographers who are creating and exploring new zones in dance. [more]

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES at Maidment
reviewed by Venus Stephens 27 Apr 2010
Providing a voice and face for those who cannot
Whilst chatting to a friend at the school crossing I made the social error of announcing, “I have tickets for The Vagina Monologues tonight.” One would have thought I'd picked up the nearest child and shaken it wildly while singing ‘Ave Maria’, by the reaction I got from the parents around me. IN COMPASS at Allen Hall Theatre
reviewed by Patrick Davies 26 Apr 2010
Themes handled with kid gloves
In Compass: A play about NAvigaTION is a series of meetings where “negotiations” take place based upon the stories and memories of the ensemble. Characters return, come and also live in New Zealand in a number of storylines that inevitably weave by and through each other. We see journeys being made both on international and internal levels ... [more]

THEATRESPORTS 2010 at Circa Two
reviewed by Jackson Coe 26 Apr 2010
A special kind of performance
Professional Improvisation is always a real treat, and that’s no secret to Wellington audiences. In a stellar opening night for the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, The Improvisors took the reins of Circa Two with a great evening of my favourite kind of improv, Theatresports. Judging by last night’s rollick, The Improvisor’s occupancy of Circa Two for the week is going to be killer. [more]

MICETRO ALLSTAR FINALS at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 26 Apr 2010
Laughter flows despite confusion and a disappointing lack of ‘ask-fors’
There is something inherently enjoyable about watching improvisation; the chuck-it-all-in, fingers-crossed approach is simultaneously nail-biting and heart-warming and this year’s first Micetro All-Star Semi-final is no exception. [more]

FIRST LAUGHS 2010 at Opera House
reviewed by John Smythe 26 Apr 2010
Get out and get into it people!
It’s like a food fair, except each purveyor showcases themselves and their ‘product’ for all the punters to ‘taste’ together. Then according to our respective tastes, we may or may not book for the full show – which will, in most cases, be presented under very different circumstances. [more]

CADBURY CRUNCHIE COMEDY GALA at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Russell Baillie 26 Apr 2010
Women get the last laugh in comedy gala's opening lines
As always, the first joke of the night in this opening barrage of the Auckland International Comedy Festival was the stage. They had gone with a Cuban theme with a banner "Viva Comedy!" above a street scene of distressed post-Castro chic ... [more]
