The Body Festival 2012
NGA HAU E WHA at Middleton Grange School Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Toby Behan 13 Oct 2012
Haunting, poetic, uplifting
The offerings themselves are well worth the contemplation. All major elements within the performance (the dance, design, and music) are undertaken with extremely high production values and the result is a performance that will visually linger with you for quite some time – at turns haunting, poetic, uplifting – with a ferocious dedication from the performers at all times. NGA HAU E WHA at Q Theatre, Rangatira

Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Dance
The narrative is rich in Nga Hau e Wha, the dancers are strong and connected. The mahi of taonga, Taane Mete and Taiaroa Royal is always to be respected as is the richness of their performance on stage. They have an organic energy that ripples through to audience. As tangata whenua whakapapa warms the work that is presented. The work is contemporary because it is present and now, the work is traditional because it is connected to wairua. The Orareka Dance Company has gifted another dance story to add to the kete of creativity distinctive to Aotearoa, New Zealand. [more]

NGA HAU E WHA at Q Theatre, Rangatira

From primordial time to the near present
The dancing requires considerable strength and versatility, with extended passages of slithering, crawling and crouching and rolling at first, sculptural sequences subsequently forming mounds and clumps and tree forms, followed by vigorous sections which launch into the air with leaps that become falls and rolls, and with the dancers running in circles. NGÂ MANURERE – THE FLOCK at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Nik Smythe 13 May 2010
Emotionally charged
When 16-year-old Morehu’s grandmother who raised him passes on, Manawa, the mother he never met, returns to uphold her mother’s dying wish that she finally take him back. Manawa ran away when he was born and Morehu is understandably distrustful of her. [more]

NGA TANGATA TOA - THE WARRIOR PEOPLE at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Oct 2006
When will we ever learn?
At many levels Hone Kouka’s Nga Tangata Toa : the warrior people proves that the more things change the more they stay the same. When warriors return from a war, old injustices surface, revenge takes root and the cycles of violence grind on … [more]

NGA TANGATA TOA - THE WARRIOR PEOPLE at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 21 Oct 2006
Fiery forces
Taki Rua has brought back Hone Kouka’s powerful and highly theatrical Nga Tangata Toa, one of the best Maori plays in my opinion because it does not attempt to contain or water down the fiery emotional forces that drive the central characters, and it tells a melodramatic story with a daring flamboyant style that uses both English and Maori to telling effect. NGA TANGATA TOA - THE WARRIOR PEOPLE at Downstage Theatre

Screaming out for atmosphere and menace
Nga Tangata Toa is ultimately a tale of revenge, utu, taken to the very and bitter extreme – not iwi vs iwi, but family vs family. Two estranged women, one Maori who married into Pakeha society (Rongomai with her dreams and healing powers), one Pakeha who married into a Maori family (Rose, who cheats on her soldier husband and is expelled from the Marae), are driven by anger and hurt to harm those they feel betrayed them. This is hatred born of a kind of insanity, with devastating, bloody results. [more]

Ngai Tahu 32 - a cohesive overall aesthetic
The careful combination of contemporary dance, haka, voiceover, images, props and song convey this personal story of choreographer Lou Potiki Bryant's family history. [more]

NGAIRE & NAUREEN’S PRISONTIME SPECIAL at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Adey Ramsel 17 May 2012
We laugh like silly school kids
Hmmm, not sure where this one’s going. Or where it came from. I’m reminded of Blackadders line: “It started off badly, it tailed off a little in the middle and the less said about the end the better – but apart from that it was excellent.” [more]

NICK GIBB IN FUNNY LIKE A CLOWN at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Simon Howard 16 May 2012
Wit and intelligence
Nick Gibb enters his new show with the bar well and truly raised. As the 2011 Billy T Award winner, audiences are beginning to appreciate this talented up-and-coming local comedian, and once he gets into his stride his witty and well-crafted stories warm this opening night Wellington crowd. [more]
