THE SECRET OF CAPPING SHOW’S SUCCESS at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
Of shows gone by and things to come
In the guise of a ‘seminar’ we are presented with an historical eye’s view of what has made the Otago University’s – the longest and continuously running – Capping Show the success that it is. [more]

BOX|ROLE|DREAM at Allen Hall Theatre
reviewed by Patrick Davies 5 Apr 2013
Smart, thoughtful and consistently good
Opening new-kid-on-the-block Counterpoint’s 2013 season, BOX/ROLE/DREAM is a quietly raging mix of bared souls and subtlety. In BOX, Victor converses with an unseen (and possibly non-existent) cohabiter of a sauna. What starts as a friendly conversation u-turns into a frightening encounter ... [more]

YOUNG AND HUNGRY 09 – WELLINGTON at BATS
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 20 Jul 2009
Demands a season pass
There is an unspoken law about the Young and Hungry festival of works. It is this, for as long as I can remember, each season has had a good play, a great play and an unutterably horrible play. Usually in that order. Not this year though. [more]

CHRISTIE IN LOVE at Southern Cross Restaurant & Bar
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 3 Aug 2009
Refreshing lunch break
Christie in Love is the first production by or at One Sharp! Lunch Theatre. Operating out of the Club Room at the Southern Cross, they present a half-hour or so piece of theatre at 1pm every day. The $16/$12 price of admission rather charmingly also includes soup. [more]

GO SOLO 2009 at Te Whaea - SEEyD Space, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 3 Aug 2009
Parading performance tricks
These pieces become the performers’ calling cards so there is a propensity for pieces clearly designed around all the tricks the performer has up their sleeve. This often comes at the expense of focus and story. [more]

ANIMAL HOUR at Wellington Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 20 Jul 2009
Alliterative exploration of alienation
In this year's fringe festival there were two things I truly loved above all else, one was Binge Culture's Drowning Bird, Plummeting Fish and the other was the cow costume from Boomerang Lean and the She-Devil from Outer Space. The very fact that Binge Culture's next show Animal Hour contained that same cow costume, should have issued it a free pass. I should be praising it to the sky right now. [more]

GOOD NIGHT - THE END at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 24 Sep 2009
Not pitched or paced for the space
Harvester of Sorrow (Jo Randerson) is not happy. She is either a grim reaper or at the very least is paid to portray one. Over the course of Good Night – The End, she mopes around her workplace’s staff room. [more]

WHERE ARE YOU MY ONLY ONE? at Circa Two
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 14 Sep 2009
Deeply disappointing
... Only One manages, with lots of effort, to distend that plot out to one hour and twenty minutes and, really, its ability to make it last that long (and feel much longer than that) is the only real thing I can praise about this production [more]

COLLAPSING CREATION at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 25 Nov 2009
Profoundly well-made
Brilliantly, Meek does not simply dwell on Darwin and evolution to support his play, avoiding the easy downfall of making nothing more than a dry biography all plugged with up with facts and blah. It is also peppered with discussions of wider ideas. It asks questions of authorship and ethics, friendship and control, family and familiarity, faith and fact. It goes much deeper than Darwin, but never distracts from the story that is there to be told. [more]

GAS at BATS
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 27 Nov 2009
A joyous, energetic experiment
Trouble is brewing at a certain Fletcher Challenge (they still exist?!) petrol station in Auckand. The company is in financial strife and one of the stations is going to have to close, but manager Cameron (Toby Leach) has a plan or two. [more]
