LA SYLPHIDE at Aotea Centre at THE EDGE®
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 28 Aug 2009
Polished performances capture true spirit of this melodramatic dance
The artistic ideals of the Danish balletic tradition are faithfully and beautifully reproduced in this Royal New Zealand Ballet season of La Sylphide, choreographer August Bournonville’s hallowed contribution to the Romantic style. [more]

DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 12 Apr 2010
Rich carnival of vibrant colour is lacking in feeling
One of China's four most famous literary novels provides the inspiration. A tragic Romeo and Juliet-ish love story unfolds against the backdrop of a prosperous feudal family. The favourite son (Baoyu) is tricked into marrying the wrong girl (Baochai) while his true love (Daiyu) dies of a broken heart. [more]

2010 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 19 May 2010
From small spaces emerge grand ideas
Four very different works conclude sterling season by this company In the first moments of Purlieu, Malia Johnston's new work opening this programme and soon bound for exhibition at the World Expo in Shanghai, small and precious performance spaces are first defined by light, as one neat little square, then two, three, four. CARMEN at Aotea Centre at THE EDGE®
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 9 Jul 2010
Barefoot in Rio with absolutely no bull
Abigail Boyle, in a surprise appearance on Auckland’s opening night, which is usually played by the “A” cast with its leading stars, is absolutely, lusciously, dangerously Carmen. She just so looks the part - long of limb and statuesquely sexy - and makes the absolute most of her physical attributes with a perfect theatrical sensibility. [more]

MY PENINA at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (New Zealand Herald) 4 Aug 2010
Comedy and tension permeate little masterpiece
With just three actors, three simple chairs and a spread of woven mats, Fiona Collins creates a little masterpiece in My Penina, encompassing enduring love, the pull and power of family and the stress fractures that form in lives caught between cultures and traditions. [more]

SHINE LADY at Leigh Hall, 4 Cumberland St
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (NZ Herald) 23 May 2011
A bejewelled celebration of the primordial feminine
Elizabeth Kirk, Julie van Renen and Liana Yew are the transcendent dancers, faultlessly powerful and yielding, lyrical and angular, quirky, cute, quicksilver, compelling - and immeasurably serene. [more]

RUN, SLIP, SPRING at Q Theatre, Rangatira

Run, Slip and Spring, Q Theatre
But gone are the warm fuzzies of a cute community dance collective - and the heartfelt rapport. Touch Compass today looks like a fully professional dance company, sophisticated, even avant garde, and begging no favours at all for the fact that not all its members are built in long limbed and lean perfection. THE NUTCRACKER ON ICE at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Bernadette Rae (NZ Herald) 5 Jul 2012
The Nutcracker on Ice
There are racing rodents, energiser bunny tin soldiers, a quartet of hallucogenically costumed Cossacks, and a Nutcracker prince of gorgeously elongated limb and romantic role, who thinks nothing of back-flipping his besotted Marie (not Clara, in this version) at lightening speed, shoulder height, spinning, grinning and she all lilac satin, flying, arched spine, extending - and making a perfect landing. Chunk. Flurry. Then they are off on the next choreographic curlicue and swirl. [more]

ROMEO & JULIET at Aotea Centre at THE EDGE®
reviewed by Francesca Horsley (New Zealand Listener) 2 Aug 2008
Dark forces
Choreographer Christopher Hampson’s Romeo and Juliet, performed by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, is -compelling theatre, an outstanding ballet. Reworked from his 2003 flamboyant original, it is more sinister, the characterisation and physicality sharper. Guest -artists Amy Hollingsworth and Cameron -McMillan bring a mesmeric depth to the -production. [more]

FINDERS KEEPERS at Great Hall, The Arts Centre
reviewed by Francesca Horsley (New Zealand Listener) 13 Aug 2009
Caged by desire and rage
Ankle-deep duck feathers coated the stage, their filaments catching the light as dancers shifted and slid through the drifts. But there was little warmth and scarce soft landings in Finders Keepers, Raewyn Hill’s fiercely uncompromising dance theatre at the Christchurch Arts Festival. [more]
