BOMBSHELLS at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Lesley Staniland (Bay of Plenty Times) 18 Sep 2008
Shell-shocked by this woman’s huge talent!
Ali Harper has talent _ that’s talent with a capital T-A-L-E-N-T. Ask anyone who packed the Mosaic Theatre last night and they’ll agree _ she was superb. [more]

THE PIED PIPER at Tararua Tramping Club, Mt Victoria
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 28 Sep 2008
Fizzy mix of slapstick, sweetness and humour
I've always wondered why, in a world of a million stories, children's theatre always returns to the classics. I now think it's partly because every classic can have a million interpretations, and partly because the adults care about the plot even if kids don't. [more]

THE BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS OF COMEDY at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 10 Jul 2009
Original, fresh and entertaining
This gang of teens from Auckland may not be quite as slick as the 20 somethings so prevalent in live comedy, but even now they show the kind of promise that will have us one day tell our grandchildren “oh yes, I saw them BEFORE they were famous”. [more]

THE AFFAIR OF THE DIAMOND NECKLACE at St James Theatre
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 3 Sep 2009
Let them eat, drink, play and dance
It’s not just a whodunnit evening, a dinner, improv theatre, a museum exhibit, role play, or party. And yet it is all of those things at once, and greater than the sum of its parts as a result. [more]

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE at Dransfield House, 335 Willis St
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 5 Sep 2009
Evidence, chocolates and suspects
Chocolate and a murder mystery? It’s a combination tailor made to get my attendance! I am a dedicated whodunnit fan, and the chance to play Miss Marple, or perhaps Hercule Poirot, is too good to miss. [more]

BUSTING OUT! at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 11 Sep 2009
Barely tasteful ribald romp surprises in the shadows
Seriously folks, this show is hilarious. You can’t help but laugh even if you are shocked. Bev Killick opens with about 30 minutes of stand up comedy ... The second part of the show is Busting Out! Emma and Bev do things with their boobs that make women wince and men gasp. [more]

COMEDY CHRISTMAS GALA at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 12 Dec 2009
More good yarns than belittling stuff, luckily
I’d like to start with a few words about this venue. You have to love the Opera House, she’s like a Victorian strumpet in her red and gold finery ... I just want to know why when they refurbished this venue they got rid of the central aisle. There were forty seats in our row. ... It didn’t help that there appeared to be a group booking from the Weak Bladder Society of Wellington occupying the middle of this row. [more]

THE 39 STEPS at Circa One (return season)
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 22 Jan 2010
Stands up better than well to a second visit
It’s not often one gets to see a production twice, especially several months apart, and even rarer to see the same story told in two totally different shows. I am in the fortunate position of having had both these privileges. In 2007 I saw the Court production adapted by Ross Gumbley from the original novel, and in Wellington I have now seen both seasons of the show adapted by Patrick Barlow from Hitchcock’s 1935 movie. SIR JOHN FALSTAFF AND THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR at Studio 77 Amphitheatre, 77 Fairlie Tce
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 14 Feb 2010
Comedically satisfying
We arrive at the amphitheatre to find a wedding party in full swing. Frank and Alice Ford are off having their photos done one presumes, and their families and friends are ensuring the guests are made welcome. Lovely touch. I immediately try to work out what the ‘take’ is going to be ... [more]

THE FARM AT THE END OF THE ROAD at Capital E
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 4 Apr 2010
Flair and humour
This show is dripping with talent – the puppets are beautifully made, and operated with flair and humour by the cast. The national tour of this show and subsequent long run means that there is a far greater investment in production values than in most holiday shows. [more]
