Loving Helen Perhaps because in politics she has always been about cranial and not carnal knowledge, has favoured rhetoric over the erotic, the Prime Minister’s sex life intrigues and/or perplexes the nation. [more] |

Meros for office! Everything that’s been said already in reviews on this website is true. Meek is relaxed, witty, focussed and determined in his pursuit of a central assaulting argument that he, our modern intellectual, (over-educated and under-employed) is the perfect Rake to both revamp Helen Clark’s public popularity and her personal love life. Perfect timing The serendipitous synchronicity that saw the long-programmed On The Conditions and Possibilities of Helen Clark Taking Me as Her Young Lover return to Wellington on the very day Helen Clark announced the election date must auger well for the aspirations of the redoubtable Richard Meros. Mixed bag of drag Those that put the Fringe Festival brochure together probably didn’t envisage how literal some of their category descriptors that they have assigned to each show would be, On The Corner at the Bluenote Bar a case in point. Described as a “‘Mixed Bag”, it is just that in every sense of the word. [more] |

Thinking movement..... satisfyingly presented Several solos, duets, trios, quartets and group sections develop, offering sophisticated movement vocabularies and clever use of space and light. While well-rehearsed and immaculately refined, individual identities of each performer had not been lost - there was uniqueness to each performer’s movement. [more] |

A journey of talent The concepts annotated in the choreographic notes were ambitious and rather serious, but the dance vocabulary was high paced, angular, aggressively in the moment, at times derivative, but also compelling as a statement in this fast paced, competitive environment. Perhaps some calm and a bit of time and space to indulge a thought would give a little more contrast. [more] |

Students own stamp allows season to shine I am delighted to report that this year’s season, by contrast, has much more of the students’ own stamp upon it, with cohering theme that allows each new work to grow out of the previous one. Dance uses highly stylized movement yet here that is anchored into the same set of domestic objects – television, bed, cupboard, piano - that feature in various ways. [more] |

Cohesive staging a brilliant choice for student works The stage is set throughout the performance with white bedroom furniture around the edges used, or not, to various ends by each choreographer. The inspired choice to use Gareth Okan’s piece to transition, introduce and conclude the performance, was incredibly successful in execution. The same costume was worn by each performer throughout, a consistent thread that took nothing away from the stark differences between pieces. [more] |

Honest insights and humour as Lawrentian ideals face practical realities Plays spun from the lives of literary figures seem to be on the increase, perhaps because we feel we have instant entry to their private thoughts, at least as they have been aired in the publishing process. Amy Rosenthal’s bright new play however, says less about the writers involved than the strenuous and deeply comic stresses of friendship and love. [more] |

Provocative at a very personal level Sustained applause greeted the Wellington premiere ... After 95-odd minutes of not quite knowing where to place ourselves in relation to a quaintly Victorian yet deeply committed woman’s observations and actions, we are left stimulated and powerfully engaged with its potently relevant themes.
