Stumbling blocks to seeing choreographers’ true potential One Way is this year’s season of contemporary dance choreography by students at NZSD, in collaboration with young composers and design students. After an impressive atmosphere in the opening scene, eleven pieces were linked into a sophisticated hour-long sequence that masked where one dance began and another ended. [more] |

Personalities liberated when dancing peer-created work Although much is made of the importance of the position of coach in the sporting world, there is still very little commentary in the wider community about the people who train our elite artists in New Zealand. [more] |

Highly entertaining tribute to the world's most common miracle The story comprises three main plots - Obstetrician Dr. Suzanna Sewell and her desperate mission to conceive before her own biological clock goes off. Workaholic fertility clinic director Dr. Roche is pregnant, in labour in fact, but in denial. Dr. Verity Rile is a driven career woman searching for the perfect sperm. [more] |

Creative comedy act takes on the circus of life The creation of new life provides a fitting inspiration for a piece of theatre that is breathtakingly spectacular, raucously funny and delicately intimate. [more] |

Scrub up, this baby’s huge The promo material for Co. Theatre Physical’s Oh Baby Baby! describes it as “ER on acid”, but there’s a whole lot of “Scrubs” in there too. Right from the get-go the audience and the cast didn’t seem to know what they were in for as the Mary-Margaret Hollins-directed production kicked off with a manic, montage-like explanation of the fertility-hospital-slash-soap setting. Weaknesses may be overcome Entering Galatos from the bright sunny street is like stepping straight into a 1930s underground French cabaret. Red tablecloths with candles face towards a well crafted set, which resembles a ladies’ dressing room. [more] |

What a piece of work is this play It has been some time since I’ve left a play with a sense of loss, sadness even, that it is over. Yet the inspiration and colour of Ophelia Thinks Harder, Jean Betts’ reworking of the story of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, stayed with me well after final curtain. John Marwick’s current production at Gryphon Theatre brings lucidity and vivacity to Betts’ storytelling and impresses with its polished yet casual grace. [more] |

Romp’s infectious joy bypasses the big questions In spite of its ongoing popularity, especially in schools, the appeal of Jean Betts’ cheeky cut and paste reconfiguration of Hamlet has never seemed an easy theatre piece to me. As a parody (where a lot of the fun of recognition abounds) it cannot take itself too seriously. As a platform for feminist perception, surely it should. [more] |

Paddling in murky waters It is the story of two wilfully naïve young girls being unwittingly coerced into becoming the only employees of a makeshift brothel. It’s about young people fighting unthinkingly against some evil they’ve not really defined but that they’re sure exists within the corporate model and, by extension, the corporate man. [more] |

But would you take one home? Why have they called this show Orphan’s of Comedy? The name implies that comedy is dead and what you see before you is all that is left - two young men from Christchurch who hold our only hope of laughter. [more] |
