Playing with redemption It is a given of history that the colony of New South Wales – and Australia – was build by the labour of convicts who, in the late 18th century, were transported from England for the good of both countries. Less certain was the question of whether convicts could be rehabilitated through such humanising enterprises as putting on a play. The perfect stage for student storytelling There are strong individual performances from the students and moments of heartfelt poignancy as the developing relationships amongst the convicts are played out under the authoritarian stare of the officers. And convicts, when being actors, are shown to be no different to actors now – temperamental and tempestuous, and storming out of rehearsals. [more] |

Aotearoa's hip hop artists - motivated, innovative and unique It was a great show...energetic, entertaining, subtle, smooth, different, experimental and positive. Out of Box, was out of my expectations and stereo types. Most importantly it achieved the goals of curator Joshua Martin in presenting the creative talents of hip hop artists and the diverse depth of New Zealand dance. [more] |

An explosion of effortless body control and high energy dancing The evening begins well before the show even starts. The audience knows they are in for a great time, and the crowd is buzzing. Endearingly, we meet each choreographer as they greet the audience between pieces, explaining their concept and giving us some tips on what to look for in each dance. What jumps out at me is the fresh immediacy of the inspiration behind each dance. The choreographers take very real everyday life scenarios and develop them before our eyes. The intimacy of each moment make the dances accessible and relevant, and we see bits of ourselves in each one. [more] |

Personal issues inspire hip hop choreography The show’s format has each choreographer introduce their dance, and Bourne tells us the music was some random classical stuff he was given by a teacher when he couldn’t make up his mind what to choreograph to. Such an inspired choice! The music is very detailed and the individual notes are matched with gestures and steps , the blocks of music matched by modular spatial arrangements - triangles, wedges, diagonal and vertical lines, and the climatic crescendos trigger showy jumps and power moves. The performers have verve and look like they utterly love what they are doing, and the audience reward them with resounding cheers. [more] |

Too crazy to be made up I feel a little bad: maybe he's not used to the standard lacklustre Kiwi response. We're not exactly known for shrieking with glee, or whooping like some kind of woodland animal are we? Usually we show our appreciation by smiling, or laughing silently – you know the way, when your shoulders jiggle with the pressure of built up joy that you know you mustn't let out, well, not while its quiet anyway. Another year of discovery for Pacific Dance Aotearoa. The Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab was set up to offer emerging choreographers, of Pacific descent, the chance to present a 10-15 minute work that they would like to develop, without the pressures of producing a show. This year each choreographer was given rehearsal space, dancers’ and promotion of their new work. Each choreographer also had 2 months to prepare their work, the longest time offered so far, for the ‘lab’. [more] |
