We're not exactly known for shrieking with glee, or whooping like some kind of woodland animal are we? Usually we show our appreciation by smiling, or laughing silently – you know the way, when your shoulders jiggle with the pressure of built up joy that you know you mustn't let out, well, not while its quiet anyway. Another year of discovery for Pacific Dance Aotearoa. The Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab was set up to offer emerging choreographers, of Pacific descent, the chance to present a 10-15 minute work that they would like to develop, without the pressures of producing a show. A gentle homage to folk who kept calm and carried on With three New Zealand plays staged out of the five seen so far in its 2012-2013 season, the Court's commitment to local playwrights is clear. Moving from the robust farce of Dave Armstrong’s The Motor Camp (June), to the thrilling, chilling Man in a Suitcase by Lynda Chanwai-Earle (August), the Court now offers a gentle domestic compilation in Pacific Post. From storytelling to spectacle ... the particular autobiographical story David Page has to tell – at the behest of, and skilfully abetted by, his dancer/choreographer/director brother Stephen Page – is equally fascinating for its uniqueness and its universal dimensions. And there is no doubting David’s skills as a storyteller, actor, singer and drag queen cabaret performer. Moving, funny and theatrical Page 8 is, as the performer’s brother and director states, a love letter to David Page’s family. Families are often seen, as Oscar Wilde once said, as terrible encumbrances, especially when one is not married. Not so for David Page whose family is his bedrock. Two years in development, with director Simon Ferry, it exudes authenticity by sharing the subjective experience of Tafi, a bright, inquisitive boy who resists puberty, the move to New Zealand and the privileges Tongans want to bestow on him because of his relative whiteness.
