OWEN O’NEILL: CHASING MY TALE at The Classic Studio
reviewed by James Amos 13 Mar 2009
Too crazy to be made up
I feel a little bad: maybe he's not used to the standard lacklustre Kiwi response. We're not exactly known for shrieking with glee, or whooping like some kind of woodland animal are we? Usually we show our appreciation by smiling, or laughing silently – you know the way, when your shoulders jiggle with the pressure of built up joy that you know you mustn't let out, well, not while its quiet anyway. Stimulating contrasts
Zahra and Alysha present a dynamic and intriguing duet that explores the roles of control and dictatorship within society and how it affects either the recipient or the authoritative self. [more]

PACIFIC DANCE LABORATORY 2012 at Mangere Arts Centre
reviewed by Teokotai Paitai 12 Nov 2012
Another year of discovery for Pacific Dance Aotearoa.
The Pacific Dance Choreographic Lab was set up to offer emerging choreographers, of Pacific descent, the chance to present a 10-15 minute work that they would like to develop, without the pressures of producing a show. This year each choreographer was given rehearsal space, dancers’ and promotion of their new work. Each choreographer also had 2 months to prepare their work, the longest time offered so far, for the ‘lab’. [more]

PACIFIC POST at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 21 Oct 2012
A gentle homage to folk who kept calm and carried on
With three New Zealand plays staged out of the five seen so far in its 2012-2013 season, the Court's commitment to local playwrights is clear. Moving from the robust farce of Dave Armstrong’s The Motor Camp (June), to the thrilling, chilling Man in a Suitcase by Lynda Chanwai-Earle (August), the Court now offers a gentle domestic compilation in Pacific Post. From storytelling to spectacle
... the particular autobiographical story David Page has to tell – at the behest of, and skilfully abetted by, his dancer/choreographer/director brother Stephen Page – is equally fascinating for its uniqueness and its universal dimensions. And there is no doubting David’s skills as a storyteller, actor, singer and drag queen cabaret performer. [more]

Moving, funny and theatrical
Page 8 is, as the performer’s brother and director states, a love letter to David Page’s family. Families are often seen, as Oscar Wilde once said, as terrible encumbrances, especially when one is not married. Not so for David Page whose family is his bedrock. [more]

One man, his family, his life
A famous young Aboriginal singer then a lost youth then once again a successful musician and performer. Such a simple premise turned into such a charming, warm hearted and thoughtful 100 minute solo show by David Page. [more]

PALANGI LOI at Centrepoint
reviewed by John Smythe 9 Apr 2006
Authentic feel to new Tongan play
Sebastian Hurrell's Palangi Loi / Tongan White Boy ... adds to the PI and immigrant culture genres while distinguishing itself by being set in Tonga ... Two years in development, with director Simon Ferry, it exudes authenticity by sharing the subjective experience of Tafi, a bright, inquisitive boy who resists puberty, the move to New Zealand and the privileges Tongans want to bestow on him because of his relative whiteness. PALLIATIVE CARE at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 9 Oct 2008
How do we comfort each other?
“I saw death every day, and it made me blunt.” Generation after generation of New Zealand men went off to fight in wars overseas. How did training to kill, to feel no emotion, affect their relationships with their families afterwards? Award-winning local playwright Emily Duncan tackles the issue in her new play, Palliative Care. [more]

PAPER SCISSORS ROCK at BATS

When the house of cards called family collapses …
So why is Penny, a young adult daughter who has gone to the trouble of writing a song in celebration of her mother’s 50th birthday, so awkward and embarrassed when she comes to sing it to her own ukulele accompaniment? [more]
