Auckland’s big year Looking over the year in Auckland according to our own record, I am impressed with numbers such as almost 300 reviews out of nearly 850 nationwide (respectably though predictably 2nd only to Wellington’s output of almost 400), all in all covering more than two hundred local and international theatrical and dance shows. “The best photographs of a choreography I have ever seen” This book is a remarkable dance document for the way it evokes, some three years after the event, the live pulse and atmosphere of the theatre-piece, choreographed by Douglas Wright. The work awed its audiences on a national tour back in 2006. These photographs by John Savage wind back that experience. [more] |

‘Festive fun meets the Twilight Zone’ ’Tis the season for monologues. It seems everyone has something to say this Christmas, and they’re doing it one-by-one. At the beginning of the month it was the slick, in-your-face, reality-show styled Christ Almighty. Now it’s Tom Sainsbury’s The Christmas Monologues. [more] |

What a year! Once more Welly has wallowed in a wondrous concoction of homegrown, classical and contemporary international work in 2009. The cream of a very healthy year’s primary production is visible in the shows and talents nominated for the democratically selected Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards 09 (voted for by critics) and the shamelessly anarchic Chapman Kip Theatre Awards 09 (where the voting serves to remind everyone what’s happened through the year and may or may not influence the final outcome). All sass, no crass in this delightful and dynamic recession-buster Where are your troubles now? Gone - I told you so! So says the MC in the musical Cabaret to his patrons - and the masterminds behind the Sexy Recession Cabaret could say the same to theirs. [more] |

Traditional heartwarming fun Ho ho ho! It’s the eighth Christmas season of The Santa Claus Show! It’s my second time seeing it, and my son’s third. Far from getting stale in fact it’s as fresh, alive and joyful as ever, and a growing tradition for many – one family attended for the fourth time. [more] |

A strong message for a modern audience Across the gulf of time and culture from fifth century BC Greece to the no frills starkness of this inner city relic, the power of the playwright, whoever he was, (modern scholarship apparently now challenges the authorship of Aeschylus) still holds an audience and teases the mind. Somewhere betwixt the devil talking backwards and a mildly pornographic small town sideshow The Sexy Recession Cabaret intends to (in the words of the director) “explore the continuum between selfishness and altruism” of our current recession; a recession that is arguably hyperbole for most, mixed with the very real downturn for some billionaires having to deal with becoming mere millionaires. I question the relevance of such a performance in our current social and creative paradigm. [more] |

More good yarns than belittling stuff, luckily I’d like to start with a few words about this venue. You have to love the Opera House, she’s like a Victorian strumpet in her red and gold finery ... I just want to know why when they refurbished this venue they got rid of the central aisle. There were forty seats in our row. ... It didn’t help that there appeared to be a group booking from the Weak Bladder Society of Wellington occupying the middle of this row. [more] |

An utter explosion of fun As much as its advertising would suggest, The Outfit Theatre Company production is not a fluffy, frivolous Christmas romp; it is a gutsy, riotous all-out farce. [more] |
