THIRD PERSON TENSE! at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 18 Oct 2012
Lost in a labyrinth of realities
Papps makes even the mildly misogynistic and egoistic Jack affable, and the ending works very well. [more]

BREL at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 5 Nov 2012
Big performances in updated emotive story songs
Post-war songwriter Jacques Brel – an inspiration for the likes of Leonard Cohen and David Bowie – wrote punchy, intense stories-in-melody which are well-suited to a theatrical presentation such as this. His lyrics range from sentimental to harsh, and Silo Theatre has created an engaging showcase of 22 songs, emphasising Brel's tug on the heartstrings. [more]

THE GREAT STORM OF 1868 at Smith's Grain Store
reviewed by Alison Begg 23 Feb 2009
Unique enriching theatre
The philosophy of Living History NZ is to “create …storytelling touchstones that connect geographically and emotionally in bringing New Zealand history alive.” It is very fitting that one of their first forays should bring to life the fine building spaces of Oamaru’s renowned Victorian harbour precinct. DESTINATION: DEATH at The Pumphouse Amphitheatre
reviewed by Candice Lewis 1 Mar 2009
Perfectly entertained and moved
Incredibly credible characters were portrayed by Regan Taylor, revealing a story of grief and friendship which is deliciously sewn together with humour and sensitivity. The dance serves as a concise mirror for the play, reflecting all aspects of the show that come to light. [more]

BURLESQUE AS YOU LIKE IT – NOT A FAMILY SHOW at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Candice Lewis 6 Mar 2009
Pretty good bang for your buck
Arriving late is inadvisable; we scraped in by the skin of our teeth due to the nightmare of finding a car park. My complimentary tickets had been sold and we were lucky that a man who knew I wasn’t pretending to be a reviewer was within earshot. We hotfoot it to the bar and grab a generously poured wine then scuttle inside. [more]

KAIROA GLORY – A TOP TOWN STORY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Candice Lewis 3 Jun 2009
Hammy comedy / satire
The characters are mostly cartoonish and oafish, with the obvious exception of Crystal (Bronwyn Turei) who plays her part with depth and sensitivity ... The cringe factor present may be intentional satire, but for the most part it reminds me of television comedies that didn’t quite work, such as Melody Rules. [more]

CINDY AND ERIC GO TO HELL at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Candice Lewis 5 Jun 2009
Every character somehow sympathetic, no matter how dishonest or grotesque
Within seconds of the opening sequence in which a hard working, subservient Cindy (Dena Kennedy) attends to her intellectually disabled client, I am transfixed. [more]

LANTERN at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Candice Lewis 9 Jun 2009
Depth and warmth
Lantern is the story of a New Zealand family of Chinese ethnicity struggling to come to terms with recent changes as their mother, Rose Chen, awakens to her own dreams. [more]

FOUR FLAT WHITES IN ITALY at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Candice Lewis 14 Jun 2009
Funny and insightful with tragic underpinnings
Two couples, one sparrowy, intellectual, sparse in joy and money, the other wealthy, peacock-bold and brash with ignorance, decide to travel to Italy together. Politics, education, clothing, money, and sex all serve to illustrate the divide between the couples. [more]

BOLLOCKS at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Candice Lewis 5 Aug 2009
Brilliant script convincingly played
Lee Hall’s Bollocks handles more than sentiment when it comes to these sensitive sacs ... Right from the opening scene I am struck by the humour that pervades what sounds like a recipe for a miserable night. This dark and beautiful narrative reveals our own fragility, desires, and frustrations. [more]
