PROMETHEUS BOUND at Old Queen’s Theatre, 120 Hereford St
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 13 Dec 2009
A strong message for a modern audience
Across the gulf of time and culture from fifth century BC Greece to the no frills starkness of this inner city relic, the power of the playwright, whoever he was, (modern scholarship apparently now challenges the authorship of Aeschylus) still holds an audience and teases the mind. [more]

THE SEXY RECESSION CABARET at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Lillian Richards 13 Dec 2009
Somewhere betwixt the devil talking backwards and a mildly pornographic small town sideshow
The Sexy Recession Cabaret intends to (in the words of the director) “explore the continuum between selfishness and altruism” of our current recession; a recession that is arguably hyperbole for most, mixed with the very real downturn for some billionaires having to deal with becoming mere millionaires. I question the relevance of such a performance in our current social and creative paradigm. [more]

COMEDY CHRISTMAS GALA at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 12 Dec 2009
More good yarns than belittling stuff, luckily
I’d like to start with a few words about this venue. You have to love the Opera House, she’s like a Victorian strumpet in her red and gold finery ... I just want to know why when they refurbished this venue they got rid of the central aisle. There were forty seats in our row. ... It didn’t help that there appeared to be a group booking from the Weak Bladder Society of Wellington occupying the middle of this row. [more]

THE OFFICE XMAS PARTY at Cross Street Studios
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 12 Dec 2009
An utter explosion of fun
As much as its advertising would suggest, The Outfit Theatre Company production is not a fluffy, frivolous Christmas romp; it is a gutsy, riotous all-out farce. [more]

2009 AUCKLAND THEATRE WRAP at Various venues
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 12 Dec 2009
Blessed with rich variety and verve
Dammit Auckland theatre, I wanted to be a bitchy critic! But this year's offerings were, in general, so complex, funny and nerve-touching I could hardly scrape together a soupcon of snide. [more]

THE WISHING TREE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 11 Dec 2009
In the lap of the theatre gods
In the foyer of Bats Theatre stands a wishing tree on which audience members can write (anonymously) on a piece of paper a wish, which is then tied onto a branch. When the show starts the tree is ceremoniously brought on stage and we are told that “to night two stars align” and that often Japanese gods wander through sacred forests and if they find your wish hanging on a tree they might make it come true. PETER PAN at Founders Theatre
reviewed by Terri Ripeka Crawford 11 Dec 2009
A window to magical world of adventure, secrets and spectacle
After a Nationwide tour, the RNZB is happy to close their season in the Waikato at The Founders Theatre. The anticipating audience at the Wednesday Eve showing is lightly humming with a quiet exuberance. A real family affair: lots of Mum’s with their ballet daughters in special pink frocks. [more]

NAOMI FERGUSSON: SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME at St James Theatre 1st Floor Gallery
reviewed by Vicki Thorpe 11 Dec 2009
Gorgeous, golden voice
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your own stories on stage. This show is one for Kiwi baby boomers who found freedom in those first years at university in the 60s and 70s. The grungy old house, first love, the music, the drugs, the motor bikes, the rock festival ….. mixed flatting! [more]

AN ADAGIO CHRISTMAS at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 10 Dec 2009
A delightful confection of tinsel and tantrums
Roll up! Roll up! The biggest Smallest Show on Earth is back in town with a lyrical, comical, ‘athletical’ confection that will delight both young and old. It will also delight those who saw Adagio 14 months ago at Downstage despite a great deal of repetition from that show. [more]

THE WISHING TREE at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 9 Dec 2009
Stories we can relate to
Each performer randomly selects a wish from the tree, one is read out provoking instant action and interaction from whoever chooses to run with it; then another, and another … Thus a selection of improvised stories begin to unfold. And once a few have been established, they randomly return for their next evolutionary stage, at the instigation of one of the actors. [more]
