BACKSTAGE at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 31 Oct 2009
An absolute blast
Once this play sparks into action, the pace is merciless, riding on wave after wave of appreciative laughter. As a world premier, the production adds a particularly scintillating twinkle to the year at The Court and another ‘do not miss’ tag to the work of this increasingly popular playwright ... [more]

PETER PAN at St James Theatre
reviewed by Jenny Stevenson 31 Oct 2009
Spirited performances strong on character
Out of choreographer Russell Kerr’s considerable oeuvre of works (72 ballets in total), Peter Pan must surely be a strong contender for the title of his ‘masterpiece’. Ten years after its original creation, in 1999, it still delights – crammed with fantasy and colour, and with its idiosyncratic choreographic style impeccably reflecting the nuances of Philip Norman’s witty score. STAND-UP AND BE COUNTED! at Katipo Cafe & Bar, 76 Willis St
reviewed by John Smythe 29 Oct 2009
Whiff of danger enhances the audience experience
The stand-up comedy response to Two Day Plays is Stand-Up and be Counted. It takes three stand-up comedians on a ‘mystery site’ experience which provides the source material for a six-minute routine each is challenged to write, learn and present at a 7pm gig on the same day ... [more]

SHIP SONGS at Tauranga Boys College Theatre
reviewed by Vanessa Byrnes 28 Oct 2009
A ripper of a yarn, beautifully told
Everyone has a great story in them, but only a few can really tell it. Ian Hughes releases his mother’s great adventure with a deft touch, sailing and winding through three legendary adventures over several centuries with nothing but his talented self, a lot of breath, impeccable timing and some wonderful projections on a very cool sail. THE BUTLER at Baycourt Theatre
reviewed by Vanessa Byrnes 28 Oct 2009
Do I dare to eat a peach (and more besides)?
Our Everyman guide in this eccentric yet strangely familiar scenario of a dinner party is a Butler, perfectly attired and astutely played, who pays attention to every detail in the canvas that comes to life before our eyes. He lights the candles, slowly but surely sets the scene, and off we go. [more]

HOTEL at The Sebel Trinity Wharf
reviewed by Vanessa Byrnes 28 Oct 2009
Real privacy at work
The first rule of improvising, according to the American approach, is to decide ‘Where am I?’ This determines much about who I am, what I want, how I get it, etc. This excellent little show uses that site-specific rule of location as its spine and then gently, gingerly, and beguilingly lets the flesh of four story lines grow on it and around it. BIRDS OF PARADISE at Ascension Vineyard, Matakana
reviewed by Celine Sumic 27 Oct 2009
An inspiring, mindful work of international class
Fashioned from top local talent and delivered with choreographer Morag Magnolia Brownlie’s characteristic humour and sensitivity, the disarmingly beautiful Birds of Paradise is a unique blend of feathery fantasy and environmental fairy tale. [more]

LOOT at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 26 Oct 2009
Satire keeps a straight face for humour
Joe Orton's outrageously irreverent farce perfectly embodies the spirit of London in the Swinging Sixties – smart, sexy, exuberant and overflowing with the cocksure adolescent attitude that animates the Beatles' earliest recordings. The play stands the test of time – thanks to Orton's brilliantly acerbic wit and wildly inventive plotting – but also shares the limitations of the sixties revolution ... [more]

HOOTCHY KOOTCHY GOES LATIN at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Venus Stephens 26 Oct 2009
Alluring performances
The Hootchy Kootchy girls have me feeling a little tentative; I descend the stairs into the foyer of the Montecristo Room on Nelson St and immediately feel a like a flower... the ‘wall’ kind. Draped around the room are the best dressed ... [more]

GIRL WITH NO WORDS: LISTENING TO THE LANGUAGE OF CUTTING at Wanaka Masonic Hall
reviewed by Viv Milsom 26 Oct 2009
A brave piece of theatre
Girl With No Words is not easy to watch, but neither can it be easily ignored, because this is a piece of theatre which both challenges and engages its audience fully. [more]
