RUDEY TRUDEY at Inverlochy Art School, Inverlochy Place, Te Aro
reviewed by John Smythe 15 Oct 2009
Delightful character … Is that all there is?
Emerging from a cupboard and covered in soot, her beautifully crafted fanciful musings reel and whirl like an Irish jig. Along with treating us to her fantastically romantic beliefs on what life is like in Paris, and how to get there, she produces key objects from pockets, drawers and folds of her frock to aid in depicting ... TMC: UNDER THE INFLUENCE at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Kat Walker 15 Oct 2009
A break-through of a show
TMC is one of the most talented hip hop dance crews that Auckland has produced. Starting off as a Two Man Crew with brothers Richie and Andrew Cesan, TMC has slowly added on members over the years whilst showcasing their unfaltering unique style. [more]

Grasps the heart of a timeless tale
Part of me wants to say if only these privileged children of the landed gentry got their hands dirty with some real work they might not get themselves into such emotional messes. On the other hand the passions of young love can run deep in any social class ... [more]

BIOGRAPHY OF MY SKIN at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Mark Westerby (Capital Times) 14 Oct 2009
Beautiful skin
We Kiwis have a habit of not talking about ourselves in great detail, afraid to lay ourselves bare, be ridiculed or opened up to criticism from others. Yet this is precisely what Miranda Harcourt has done in her new production Biography of My Skin. [more]

Inspiring evening of contemporary dance
At first I didn’t know what to expect on this sunny early evening in Auckland. Footnote Dance was going to present its 2009 Solo Series at this year’s Tempo Festival of Dance at the City Art Rooms and Cassette 9. Both venues are located in the heart of central Auckland and promised to be exciting sites to watch the company’s latest productions. [more]

HENRY VI PART 1 at Union Hall, Student Union Building, Victoria University
reviewed by John Smythe 13 Oct 2009
Shakespeare lives at Vic!
If you think Shakespeare’s histories are tedious talk-fests where most of the lively action happens off stage, hie thee – tonight or tomorrow (it’s only on for 3 nights!) – to this Ninja warriors meets Star Wars treatment of Henry VI Part 1. It positively seethes with action, humour and drama without ever sacrificing meaning and understanding. [more]

Solos in 3-venue circuit
The annual Forte season by Footnote has taken a new turn, with six choreographers each making a solo, inspired by an iconic New Zealander, for one of the company’s six dancers. Circa, Museum Hotel, and Hooch in Courtenay Place was the circuit, and allowed audiences a clear take on each dancer, not something which group works always offer. [more]

SOUTHERN LIGHTS DANCE COMPANY at Ngaio Marsh Theatre
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 12 Oct 2009
Brave new choreographies
If you have seen the poster for the inaugural season of a three tier programme simply named World Premier Debut Season, do not be alarmed, and take no notice. This dance material is not gumboots and madcap bodies in vast empty spaces but a most sophisticated evening; perhaps the most sophisticated evening of contemporary dance produced in this country in the last few years? THE VERTICAL HOUR at Circa One
reviewed by John Smythe 12 Oct 2009
Interesting if neither gripping nor enlightening
“In combat medicine,” David Hare’s ex war correspondent turned academic, Nadia, tells us … “there's this moment, the vertical hour, when you can actually be of some use.” It seems fair, then, to ask whether this two-and-a-quarter hour play (plus interval) is of any use when it comes to helping us grapple with terrorism in general and the Iraq question in particular. THE HISTORY BOYS at Maidment
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 12 Oct 2009
Young talent makes high-spirited history in clash of ideas
It is easy to see why Alan Bennett's play has enjoyed phenomenal success on both sides of the Atlantic as well as being a smash hit at the 2006 International Festival in Wellington. The play delivers a deeply intellectual treatment of a difficult topic in a package both emotionally engaging and hugely entertaining. [more]
