PSYCHOPATHS at The Shed 10 (enter 77 Cook St)
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 3 Feb 2010
A Comedy of Horrors
Thomas Sainsbury uses theatre space to explore his characters’ minds. From shoe-shop employees hearing voices in their heads in And Then You Die, to a self-isolated man hiding out in a cellar, convinced he is not alone in Basement; justified suspicion and angst are omnipresent. [more]

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 19 May 2011
Either over-written, under-rehearsed or both
Set on Election Day 2011, Public Service Announcements is something of a warning. The scene is set with a John Campbell voice-over announcing early indications are that Winston Peters is making a comeback (the poster suggests this too). [more]

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS #2 at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 17 Sep 2011
Political targets well hit
Much is made, this time, of the distraction the Rugby World Cup allows when it comes to ramming through unpopular policies. Indeed the through-line premise for this one is that the leaders’ debate on television is timed to coincide with the NZ v France match ... [more]

Borax poked effectively
It’s election year and time to revive (or should that be disinter?) the late-night satirical revue. James Nokise and Rachel Henry have come up with a 40 minute revue that contains quick-fire sketches that were once the staple diet of TV comedy. [more]

unchallenging, bawdy entertainment
James Nokise and his team have moved away from grander historical perspectives this time round, losing a lot of structure in the process: PSA Mark II is 40 minutes of straight skits and send-ups about the here and now, pitching strongly to an alcohol-soaked late-night Friday & Saturday crowd. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS – REVOLUTION! at BATS - Out Of Site - Cnr Cuba & Dixon

Long may Nokise bring it
If I was looking to pitch a political satirical television programme – think Spitting Image (UK: 1984-1996) and Public Eye (NZ: late 80s) without the latex puppetry – I’d head straight to James Nokise and hire him immediately as a writer. He knows his stuff and how to package and deliver it in a mad paced and packed 60 minutes, proven by Public Service Announcements: Revolution. [more]

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS: THE BUDGET SHOW at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 17 May 2012
See Winston save the world!
Nokise's astute observations and jibes allow the politically literate – of which there are many on opening night – to have a ball while there is plenty of broad comedy to keep the 'average person in the street' happy. [more]

Much-needed gap-filler
Public Service Announcements, returns to Bats for the fifth time, this time based around the coming budget. All the parliamentarians from before are there, played by some regulars plus new actors. [more]

PUKEPUKE 'O TONGA at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Raewyn Whyte (NZ Herald) 22 Oct 2012
Tempo Dance Festival: Final weekend packed with stunners
Pukepuke'o Tonga was a world premiere in the truest sense, a suite of 10 historic Tongan dances dating from 1200 AD, recovered and arranged by choreographer Sesilia Pusiaki Tatuila to ensure they will not be lost. Each dance has its own songs and rhythms, beautifully delivered by the dancers, together comprising an intimate ceremonial event arrayed for a village setting, with the performers seated on the floor and the audience looking on. PUKEPUKE 'O TONGA at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St

A first for Tempo Festival, probably a first for New Zealand!
Lighting rises slightly as three women take the stage, stepping and with gentle hand gestures, caressing the atmosphere. The red edging on their tapa cloth wraps offsets the red fabric triangles around their necks. All with long hair and a soft plait framing their joyous faces, they move with grace and precision. I notice the faces in the audience are shining back at them. [more]
