ARCH ENEMIES AND OTHER CLOSE ACQUAINTANCES at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Energy to burn
Along with plays about flats and broken relationships, plays by young New Zealanders about their big OE experiences are popular fodder. Olivia Bryant is the latest with her solo play Arch Enemies and other close acquaintances, looking at the curious characters and weird situations she found herself dealing with while in the Big Apple. Energetic performance
New York City – city that never sleeps, centre of the universe, breeding ground for Arch Enemies and Other Close Acquaintances. This is a one-woman show filled with a selection of wacky characters, all portrayed by Olivia Bryant and directed by Ellie Smith. [more]

ARCTIC ANTARCTIC: A BIPOLAR PLAY at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe (John Smythe: theatre reviews) 22 Feb 2006
Desperately seeking equilibrium
The funny thing is we go to the theatre seeking drama then when we’re confronted with it in the very real form of mental illness, the relentless roller-coaster is almost too much to bear. What makes it compelling is the delusional truth of the subjective experience. [more]

ARCTIC ANTARCTIC: A BIPOLAR PLAY at BATS

A manic world
... there is no denying that this is a powerful piece of writing based not only of Simmonds experiences of mental health but the systems set up to deal with the illness and those closely effected by it and that no doubt writing the play had some therapeutic value for her. [more]

ARE YOU SCARED OF ME? GHOSTING PART 6 at Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson
reviewed by Jack Gray 10 Jul 2011
...the weirdest thing I have ever seen
The friend I went with has seen some of the other Ghosting series and says this is the most fully realised of the lot. She refers to a statement in the programme that says: “So the aims are serious but we want people to have a good time, and to be challenged. It should be fun, a little scary and at times even beautiful.” She says she felt all of those things ... [more]

ARJ BARKER – GO TIME at Opera House
reviewed by Caoilinn Hughes 9 May 2013
Effortless and easy
Barker is an affable American funnyman, inclined towards hippy-go-lucky philosophy. The philosophy encapsulated in Go Time – and I do love a good moral-of-the- comedy – prioritizes the heart over the head. [more]

ARJ BARKER: NEW AND IMPROVED (USA) at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall
reviewed by Sian Robertson 23 Apr 2008
Plays us like a drum kit
Known to most of us as Dave from Flight of the Conchords, some of you are going to be disappointed to learn that Arj Barker’s Auckland shows are completely sold out – for good reason. [more]

ARMSLENGTH at Circa Two
reviewed by John Smythe 19 Jan 2008
Fresh creativity in juicy play
Intriguing in its form and content, Armslength proves that Branwen Millar’s extraordinary debut play Noisy Shadows (Theatre Militia at BATS, late March 2006) was no flash in the pan. Whereas Noisy Shadows pits flatmates against an insistent outside world of media news, Armslength isolates its characters in psychological silos that others find hard to breach. [more]

ARMSLENGTH at Circa Two

Witty work of art and science
Branwen Millar is clearly a new playwright going places. Her Armslength is a lively and entertaining drama that snaps and crackles with sharp, witty dialogue, an interesting range characters, and a climactic scene that is visually and dramatically exciting. [more]

Meaty and elegant
What a way to start the year – five plays, four of them New Zealand works. And those works all about as different as you could wish for. [more]
