TWO DAY PLAYS (NZ) – DRAFT TWO at BATS
reviewed by Michael Wray (4) 29 Sep 2009
Final Wrap Up
As with the heats, two design elements have to appear in each 10 minute play, along with two randomly assigned props. The design elements on offer for the final were 30 seconds of stage-generated music, a 30 second period where all of the characters have to be in physical contact and a Heimlich manoeuvre. [more]

MATES & LOVERS at BATS
reviewed by Sarah Helm (GayNZ.com) 25 Sep 2009
Book your tickets because you won't want to miss this
An accessible journey into the history of gay and bisexual men in our land of milk and honey, this 80 minute theatrical journey magically progresses you through the decades since early colonisation. Two beautiful and convincing actors are your history guides, with only two chairs and some flimsy clothing to aid their recreation of sensitive, amusing, and significant moments of our gay whakapapa. GLORIOUS at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Clare Adams (The Critic (Otago University)) 6 Oct 2009
Glorious, like that woman in that film with Katherine Hepburn
... Yes, I’m starting a review with the recommendation; it should tip you off as to how gushy the following will be, but don’t let me put you off. The Fortune is the stage of only a couple of good productions each year, and this show is one of the really, really good ones. [more]

BHARATAM: AN INSPIRATIONAL SOLO JOURNEY THROUGH DANCE at Southern Ballet Theatre
reviewed by Mark James Hamilton with Shayne Panayiotis Comino 8 Oct 2009
Rich and intricate
Vivek’s solo presence holds the stage completely. His confidence is radiant and he engages the whole audience. Intimacy in performance has become somewhat of a cliché, but Vivek achieves that very kind of rapport. [more]

BIOGRAPHY OF MY SKIN at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Mark Westerby (Capital Times) 14 Oct 2009
Beautiful skin
We Kiwis have a habit of not talking about ourselves in great detail, afraid to lay ourselves bare, be ridiculed or opened up to criticism from others. Yet this is precisely what Miranda Harcourt has done in her new production Biography of My Skin. [more]

PRODIGIOUS PILOT at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Carol Brown 21 Oct 2009
Playful pastiche and flamboyant dancing – but why?
Billy Idol’s ‘Dancing with Myself’ becomes the anthem as this almost all-female company negotiate rites of femininity and perform a series of short dances. But a desire to dance does not a dance show make. [more]

SKIN TIGHT at Pleasance Theatre, Islington
reviewed by Catherine Campbell 23 Oct 2009
A thousand complexities in one relationship
Skin Tight is as passionate, confusing and intimate as any relationship. Add in violent, masochistic and deeply tender and you have the relationship between Elizabeth and Tom, who have survived a world war, infidelity, parental disapproval and disappointing offspring. But only just. [more]

THE POWER OF LOVE at The Courtyard Theatre
reviewed by Catherine Campbell 9 Apr 2010

The name – The Power of Love – is suggestive of some kind of gloomy treatise on modern relationships; a passionate love affair with undertones of physical abuse and manipulation. After all it is the title of a Celine Dion song ... So I was completely surprised to find myself watching a witty sci-fi thriller with more plot twists than a Dan Brown novel. [more]

GIRL WITH NO WORDS: LISTENING TO THE LANGUAGE OF CUTTING at Wanaka Masonic Hall
reviewed by Viv Milsom 26 Oct 2009
A brave piece of theatre
Girl With No Words is not easy to watch, but neither can it be easily ignored, because this is a piece of theatre which both challenges and engages its audience fully. [more]

SKIN TIGHT at Pleasance Theatre, Islington
reviewed by James Hadley 26 Oct 2009
Physical intensity
Shaky Isles Theatre can claim to be the leading New Zealand theatre company based in London. They have been presenting readings and stagings of New Zealand plays in some of the city’s Fringe venues since 2006. They have chosen to stage Gary Henderson’s Skin Tight as their main production of this year ... [more]
