A vital contribution to NZ theatre I had the honor of being in Wellington on the night Purapurawhetu was born in the late 90s. Almost 15 years later I am again honoured to view Briar Grace-Smith's delicately crafted and, to this day, profoundly relevant theatre classic. [more] |

Fortuitous symbiosis generates a quiet revolution In a sped up world this evening of dance offers us a vital reminder of the gentle but purposeful passing of time; a meditation of and on the body – elegant, controlled, beautiful. Everyone needs to see it! [more] |

Mesmerising dance a lighting delight Infinity lies in both directions. Russell Maliphant’s centripetal, earthed choreography and Sylvie Guillem’s centrifugal airlifted dancing made a sublime performance of great grace and apparent ease that a spellbound audience will not easily forget. Michael Hull’s remarkable lighting is a part of the equation. [more] |

Hypnotic, beautiful performance transforms stage That Sylvie Guillem inhabits the perfect body for dance is a given. She is slender, so that her exposed back is a contour map of exquisite musculature, but never gaunt. She is strong, so she leaps light as a gazelle, time and again ... [more] |

Shared heart, passion, grace, generosity … A single low light on a lowered rig encases a statuesque body; an angel in white chiffon. Frenchwoman Sylvie Guillem, the worlds most famous ‘ballerina’ (today) cuts her recognisably distinctive figure with her trademark copper shot hair. It is a much anticipated glimpse of a real life goddess. [more] |

Impressive student dancers promise a great future The two dance forms from South India immersed the audience in the stories and mythologies of the area. Mohiniyattam is ‘the dance of the beautiful woman’ and Swaroopa Unni personified this with her exquisite, precise dance, makeup and costumes. Papabhaya haranam, a dance in praise of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god who removes obstacles, including fear and sadness was particularly evocative. [more] |

Well worth braving the elements A packed hall of eager children lapped up the opening performance of KizStuff’s Puss ’n Boots.* Some were so eager to answer questions and offer suggestions that a total departure from the script into a ‘theatresports’-style improv almost seemed in order. As it was the actors did a good job of accommodating the chaos while staying on track. [more] |

Bubbling fun with dubious moral The actors in Puss ‘n Boots will have to be on their toes if their audiences are as quick as the audience at the first performance. “That’s a rubber chicken!” shouted one boy when we were informed it was a plucked pheasant, and when we were warned that Igor the Ogre was scary someone announced calmly that he didn’t think he was scary at all. Raucous entertainment with a purpose Written and directed by Alwyn Dale and Becca Barnes, this ocean comedy/drama manages to incorporate so many elements. There are laughs, there is drama and, best of all, we learn exactly what happens when mermaid and a human man create a ... WHAT exactly?! [more] |

Not Shaw We know we’re in trouble when the Director states in his programme notes that he has come to the job with no pre-conceived ideas and has neither seen the play staged before or indeed the more famous musical based upon it. This may be ideal for modern theatre and a modern interpretation of a classic but you do need to have a grasp of the themes and at least understand the characters. [more] |
