Polished performances capture true spirit of this melodramatic dance
The artistic ideals of the Danish balletic tradition are faithfully and beautifully reproduced in this Royal New Zealand Ballet season of La Sylphide, choreographer August Bournonville’s hallowed contribution to the Romantic style. [more]

Compelling net casting
Witi Ihimaera’s 1977 collection of short stories The New Net Goes Fishing begins with a story of a family leaving Waituhi to travel the yellow brick road to the Emerald City (Wellington) and it ends with an account of the grandfather twenty years later returning to his papakainga (ancestral home). Perpetuating imperial European cultural legacies
The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s latest offering of Dances from Napoli and La Sylphide presents a nostalgic homage to 19th Century Danish choreographer August Bournonville. As with all such homages, this production raises important cultural questions. [more]

WOLF’S LAIR at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave

Beautiful, thought-provoking theatre
Robert’s performance focuses all my attention. She is a young, beautiful innocent just wanting to have an adventure in Berlin, then an arrogant, worn down woman of the world haunted by a corpse-littered past. She is bright and blank, then rippling with pain and regret ... [more]

Fresh, nutritious and deeply entertaining
This intriguingly elusive evocation of an OE experience begins as a straight-forward narrative and turns out to be a great deal more. Eight bites of the Apple
Two Off-Broadway shows, one freebie in Central Park and five Fringe shows sweetened my too-few days in the Big Apple. [more]

I have seen the next No.2 [the 9-character solo play by Toa Fraser] and it’s written and performed by Kristyl Neho. [more]

Creative comedy act takes on the circus of life
The creation of new life provides a fitting inspiration for a piece of theatre that is breathtakingly spectacular, raucously funny and delicately intimate. [more]

Smiles Under a Tuscan Sun
The first half of Roger Hall’s latest comedy is a series of light-hearted sketches in which two odd Kiwi couples – they barely know each other – end up touring Italy together, spending three days in both Venice and Rome and a whole week in a villa in Tuscany. [more]

SON ET LUMIèRE: HOME at First Church of Otago

Poetry and beauty marginalises important political and religious issues
Writer/director Richard Huber’s new work [may be] described as a poetic radio play supported by coloristic painting and projected lights from designer Martyn Roberts. The physical performances of the principal actors, Simon O’Connor and Barbara Power, are restrained and at times nearly static, their vocal presence filling the space ... [more]
