CORPSE ON THE SIDE at Club Ivy, The Garden Club, 13B Dixon St
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 1 Dec 2010
Lots of talent in flawed fundraiser fun
The premise of the piece is Trevor and Mia’s two year anniversary party. As the audience arrive we are offered a free drink –which is delightful- and then talked to as ‘guests’ by circulating actors, as the characters, who are also guests, arrive. [more]

CHRIST ALMIGHTY! at BATS
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 8 Dec 2010
As subtle as a Liverpool kiss and as devout as a vegan in leather
It’s census time in Bethlehem. The inn is bursting, Gabrielle’s bitching, the Shepherd’s bragging, the Donkey’s braying and bastard boy-child Jesus Christ is coming. In fact, everyone’s coming. Except poor Mary! [more]

BIG TROUBLE IN SMALL NEWTOWN at BATS
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 28 Feb 2011
Genuinely enjoyable
Big Trouble in Small Newtown is a highly enjoyable and whimsical comedy that achieves and largely maintains a balance between being light-hearted and not being quite so flip as to tumble into obscurity. [more]

THE WATER STATION at Studio 77, VUW
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 16 May 2013
Beautiful, disciplined, focused, committed
Slowly, ever so slowly, characters enter the space. This tempo (according to the programme notes, “faster than Ota’s prescribed 2 metres in 5 minutes”) is at times utterly effective and hypnotic and at times mildly infuriating. The times when actors manage to seemingly move all of their muscles exactly as they would at an everyday tempo but all slowed down to some degree, are truly magical. [more]

MUSICALITY at Greenlane Christian Centre, 17 Marewa Rd
reviewed by Jacqui Cesan 2 Jun 2010
Confident crew ready to move beyond a variety concert
Musicality is the debut show from Hopscotch and as I knew that many of them were relatively inexperienced my expectation was not high. I was preparing myself for another Hip Hop show (which seem to happen weekly at the moment) and was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a variety of dance in the programme. [more]

TE KAUPOI at BATS
reviewed by Paul Diamond 13 Jun 2010
History repeats, loudly
Te Kaupoi challenges us to consider what the impact might be if, as some do argue, the Mâori seats were to be abolished. More potent perhaps, are the play’s themes centred around Mâori culture, the essence of being Mâori. Navigating the choices inherent in being Mâori is not an easy, straight-forward business. [more]

MATAPIHI KI TE AO at Te Herenga Waka Marae, Victoria University, Kelburn Parade
reviewed by Paul Diamond 27 Jul 2010
Skilfully conveyed in a gentle, ngäwari manner
For the last 15 each years, Taki Rua has toured total immersion Mäori theatre throughout Aotearoa. This year’s production, Matapihi ki te ao (window to the world) had a different genesis to earlier productions. Rather than working from a written text, the play is a devised work, based on the performers’ own stories. A great strength of this approach is the ‘naturalness’ of the Mäori language in the very enjoyable 45 minute piece. [more]

XERXES at St James Theatre
reviewed by Paul Diamond 17 Mar 2011
Sublime blend of voices and orchestra
First performed in 1738, Xerxes has finally made it to New Zealand, in the first fully staged professional production of any of the 47 operas written by Handel. The wait has been worthwhile – this production is splendid. [more]

CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA AND PAGLIACCI at St James Theatre
reviewed by Paul Diamond 1 Sep 2011
Powerful, dramatic works shattering yet uplifting
These two short operas, just over an hour each and known as Cav & Pag, premiered in 1890 and 1892 respectively. Since 1893, they have tended to be performed together, always in the same order. It’s an apt pairing, both being concerned with timeless tragic stories of love that goes wrong, ending in violence. [more]

SWAN LAKE ON ICE at Isaac Theatre Royal
reviewed by Brigid Kelly 1 Jul 2010
Emotion and story prevail over astonishing technique
One of ballet’s most often-presented classics has been given new heart and a touch of fire in this lavish, satisfying production by touring Russian company Imperial Ice Stars. [more]
