RED at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 15 Apr 2012
Always absorbing, at times electrifying; seriously impressive
"People who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them," said the famous abstract-expressionist artist, Mark Rothko. Is it then blasphemy to use such art as mere decor in a restaurant where only the privileged will eat? [more]

Superb portrayal of Rothko and assistant
As full-length plays go, Red is quite short. It requires two actors, and uncomplicated set, and some paint. So why does it seem such an audacious undertaking? Because of John Logan's brilliant, Tony award-winning script, because of its towering themes – art, creativity, permanence, the sublime – and because of the demands it makes of its director, its actors and its audience. Powerful portrait of an abstract artist
Fine collaboration gives Mark Rothko’s expressionist art the respect it deserves Rothko's luminous rectangles of pure colour represent a final stab at the modernist project of creating an art that would usurp the function of religion. [more]

Engages the visceral and pits it against the mundane
On the day James Wallace is named in the Queen’s Birthday honours list as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit I sit down to review a play about artists, and, more specifically, a play that celebrates the life of a great painter as interpreted by one of our greatest actors. [more]

RED (RNZB) at Aotea Centre at THE EDGE®

Far outshines previous work
I love it that the company is bringing forth inventive work. I love it that the dancers get to dance difficult movement in sophisticated choreography to diverse music. I love it that the dancers are a more hybrid group. [more]

RED RIDING HOOD at Fortune Theatre

Panto promise of fun kept for young, old alike
People go to pantomimes to have fun, and fun was what the Fortune Theatre audience was having on Saturday night. [more]

Bawdy brilliance with extra prunes
Well it’s not Uncle Vanya, but I loved it! Director David Lawrence’s trademark is, I quote, “existential angst-ridden soul-searching” theatre. However, in his director’s notes he pre-empts any concerns that might be felt about his suitability for pantomime by passionately defending the role of accessible, escapist theatre to excite the imagination and comment in a seemingly apolitical manner on the problems of the world. RED RIVER | CORE at Blue Oyster Art Project Space
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 5 Apr 2010
What lies at the core
Most dramatic and on a larger scale is Red River’s Core, ‘an installation with moving parts’, and winner of Fringe Best Production Design. Directed by Katrina Thomson, creator of last year’s stunning 3rd Horse, the performance is followed up by the exhibition of gorgeous photos of the images created. Either could stand alone, but each gains from its counterpart. [more]

RED SHORTS at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge

Mixed results deserve to be embraced
Wilson has essentially devised and written an evening’s theatre that is four (Chekhov) plays within a play, taking some bold risks along the way, with mixed results. [more]

REFLECT – DREAMS OF SPACE SHIFTING at Splore Living Lounge, Tapapakanga Regional Park
reviewed by Shanon O'Sullivan 22 Feb 2010
Powerful performances against a striking backdrop
Nestled amongst majestic pohutukawa on a hilltop and former Maori pa site overlooking the ocean, two figures (Liana Yew and Rachel Ruckstuhl-Mann) stand posed, wrapped in long flowing layers of white chiffon gauze that spread out over the earth. Wooden branches are attached to their bodies and their presence melds into the open space. [more]
