GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS at 4 Moncrieff St., Mt. Victoria
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 4 Jul 2012
Fresh and invigorating
KidzStuff Theatre for Children is running a great new talent contest in town called What Bears Have Talent. Unfortunately, one of the contestants, a young girl called Goldilocks, is not eligible to enter because she isn’t a bear. [more]

HANSEL AND GRETEL at Gryphon
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 5 Jul 2012
Uncomplicated story brought to life
Another traditional tale innovatively adapted is Kapitall Kids Theatre’s production of Hansel and Gretel by Ben Haddock and Rebecca Parker. Much of the story has been pared back with lots of cleverly adapted songs included to make the story simply but effectively told. [more]

YOUNG & HUNGRY 2012 at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 9 Jul 2012
Social media in lead role on youth drama
Social media, in particular Facebook, is becoming a dominate feature of plays and this year the Young and Hungry season at BATS is no exception. And this year the three plays that make up the programme achieve, without exception, all the ideals of the Young and Hungry concept and are probably some of the best productions seen in the 18 years the programme has been going. Icon’s engaging trip through great musical era
As infamous as he was famous, Phil Spector has been one of the most influential people in the music industry post Rock and Roll. Developing the Spector ‘Wall of Sound’ production technique out of the Brill Building studios in New York, and with the creation of his girl groups such as The Ronnettes and The Crystals, he produced over 25 top 40 hits between 1960 and 1965. FIXTV at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 16 Jul 2012
Chat show interesting but rather unconvincing
Having had little in the way of entertainment on stage recently Downstage Theatre has now curiously branched out into something new with a magazine-style web TV chat show called FixTV that they are hosting in collaboration with Cuba Creative and Random Films. [more]

MAGNOLIA STREET at Downstage Theatre

Warm the heart on Magnolia Street

NUCLEAR FAMILY at Circa Two
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 26 Jul 2012
Vital portrayal of immigrants’ trials
Towards the end of Desiree Gezentsvey’s autobiographical play Nuclear Family, currently playing at Circa Two, one of the characters says “the joys of immigration – always questioning if you have done the right thing”. And of course in such situations family and their support are crucial to surviving the rigors of a new life in a new land. [more]

WEST END GIRLS at Circa One
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 6 Aug 2012
Tale of prostitute’s helper lively bit of entertainment
Few people in NZ would have heard of Barbara Tate, the central figure of Circa Theatre’s latest play West End Girls. If they had it would probably have been as one of Britain’s leading women artists. But unbeknown to many, her early life in the late 1940’s began in Soho, London, not as an art student but as a prostitute’s maid. [more]

SKELLIG at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman 16 Aug 2012
Entertaining tale for young and old
The essence of any good children’s story is to capture the reader’s imagination and that is certainly the case with Skellig, adapted for the stage by David Almond from his award-winning children’s story. [more]

DOG & BONE at Whitireia Performance Centre, 25-27 Vivian Street
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 24 Aug 2012
An engaging work with many strands
Lyrical and poetic, Pearse-Otene’s writing is grand and operatic and while the many strands of the story at times need further work to consolidate the story more, the large cast under Jim Moriarty’s direction nevertheless bring it all together with sincerity, commitment and loads of energy. [more]
