Fusing circus and burlesque Estadio has established itself as the home of burlesque in Wellington and there were plenty of aficionados of this fabulous form of entertainment in attendance on Friday night. Revolver Circus-Club fuses circus elements with burlesque, and true to its name, it goes off with all the happiness of a warm gun. [more] |

Remarkably raunchy and risibly rude The first act proper is scruffy ragdoll mascot girl Maria Blacklips, flinging her limbs about with dynamic flair, again engaging the frequently utilised revolving stage. She is follow by one of the waistcoat fellows, the bearded one, ‘Beau Champagne’, who takes us through a round of deft and nimble, if wholly perfunctory, trapeze manoeuvres to a pumping dubstep soundtrack. Atmosphere soaked steampunk circus ...the theatricality of the show is outstanding. There has been much attention paid to detail in the construction of Revolver and it pays dividends. Men with clownish make-up and bowler hats statuesquely greet you at the door and move through the audience pre-show. The titular feature of the show is a small revolving platform that is used sparingly, but completely effectively throughout the show. At crucial moments (especially the beginning of the show) the action will parade forward down the raised runway, and then freeze and revolve before our eyes. With a stage setting that is fully 360 degrees (in terms of audience placement), this is a feature that is well conceived and employed. [more] |

Mixed quality amid a heady atmosphere of mystery and intense excitement NZ Cabaret shows seem to present performers more than once in their programmes, which can either hint at a lack of content or make a performance a cohesive package rather than a lineup. The latter is the only just the case for Revolver, though it does highlight the performers with one excellent act and one not so... [more] |

Cerebral, impassioned, increasingly visual Zhang Wu’s distinctively avant-garde set design is a felicitous platform for accomplished Mandarin playwright Liao Yimei’s first script, written in 1999, now a cult classic. Her script is at first very wordy with mainly static visual elements such as leading love-interest/monomaniacal obsession Ming Ming as she first appears, seated and blindfolded, as protagonist Ma Lu, an earnest and sensitive Rhinoceros keeper at the local zoo, imparts a verbose diatribe of passionate declarations and cerebral philosophising. Has its moments Fair enough, I think, as Rhys Darby then Dai Henwood treat us to the first of their unsung Kiwi everymen’. They’re starting low key, giving themselves somewhere to go. And yes, they sort of do. [more] See also reviews by: Kate Ward-Smythe |

Blokey treat The Everymen is a rare treat. Two men unafraid to tackle some pretty hefty current political, social and blokey issues, through their outstanding character comedy. [more] See also reviews by: John Smythe |

Yuk precedes Kiwi brilliance If Rhys Darby hadn’t been so charismatic and charming, so loveably self-deprecating and self-effacing, and just such a funny good guy, I might have poked someone’s eyes out after the warm-up act, Adam Ethan Crow. [more] |
