PORTRAIT OF AN UNIDENTIFIED MAN at The Great Hall, The Arts Centre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 2 Aug 2009
Feats of illusion
In bringing from the shadows the dealings of Elmyr de Hory, the most prolific art forger of the twentieth century, Pierre Brault has come up with a fascinating study. At the same time, he raises questions about all art and about the nature of deception. [more]

APOLLO 13: MISSION CONTROL at Lower NZI, Level 1, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 Aug 2009
A fun experience with real dramatic tension
Ingenious devices both technological and theatrical are employed throughout to both replicate the tension of a genuine crisis whilst ultimately leading to a satisfying solution. Receiving arbitrary instructions through their job manuals, or else by telephone or memo, various audience members at different times leap to action accordingly ... [more]

RAFAEL BONACHELA’S 360° at Isaac Theatre Royal
reviewed by Mark James Hamilton 1 Aug 2009
Notions of The Matrix hang around all night
Throughout the work, a huge rear screen is chocker. Kinky close-ups of orchids. Wicked tunnel chases. Sand flying upwards off a skull. Oddities triggering flickers of half-remembered dreams. Train horns and helicopters fade away into a celestial chord, and a crack appears between giant mirrors. [more]

ONCE AND FOR ALL WE’RE GONNA TELL YOU WHO WE ARE SO SHUT UP AND LISTEN at St Margaret's College Chapel
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 1 Aug 2009
Battering spontaneity pushes boundaries
Its unmistakably in-yer-face creation and recreation of adolescence is hectically physical and at the same time curiously innocent of the compromises age and the world have in store. The result is a brutally immediate piece of work that is not without poignancy if you are over, say, twenty. [more]

LA SYLPHIDE at St James Theatre
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 1 Aug 2009
Highly enjoyable and satisfying
The Bournonville style, essentially the unfiltered 19th century technique of the French school of classical dance, is light and airy with lightening fast and assured petite batterie for the feet and a soft rounded use of the arms. It is a pleasing form and in this production the company, dancing finely, step up to evoke a world of mystery and beauty. [more]

LOVE YOU APPROXIMATELY at Centre of Contemporary Art: CoCA
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 1 Aug 2009
Redefining what the shared experience of theatre might involve
The clinic in action is proof that there is no limit to creative collaboration. This piece blends film from Spain and New Zealand, the live performer at CoCA and liberal use of webcam, e-mail and texting to advance the story. Scriptwriter Lucette Hindin and director Julieanne Eason have achieved a meticulous composite. [more]

Brave and bright ballet perfect on a cold night
This night at the ballet is spirited, poignant and beautiful, for a host of reasons and all of them the right ones. [more]

LE SUD at James Hay Theatre
reviewed by Elody Rathgen 29 Jul 2009
Energetic irreverence
Le Sud adapts a nifty concept to make a lively theatre farce, which will appeal particularly to South Island audiences. Sud Zealand (the South island) has been colonised by the French, while North Zealand (the North island) has been colonised by Britain. Both have significant indigenous populations. [more]

THE 39 STEPS at Circa One
reviewed by Priyanka Bhonsule (Hutt News) (The Hutt News) 28 Jul 2009
Step up for laughs
Not counting Comedy Festival shows, it's been a while since a play saw audiences belly-laughing and Circa's new production The 39 Steps manages that and so much more. [more]

LULLABY JOCK at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by James Amos 28 Jul 2009
Personal and universal; funny and tragic; brave and revealing; genuinely touching
The story is of Jock’s life, of laughter, alcoholism, love and war. I laughed and cried, then laughed again … then cried again … I mean it! Ferry’s performance is sublime and we are constantly being flipped between Jock’s cheeky antics and the shocking tragedy of war. [more]
