BUSTIN'OUT - HAGLEY DANCE COMPANY at Hagley Open Stage
reviewed by Julia Milsom 10 Dec 2011
A passion for dance seen in 14 short works
The works are presented across a diverse range of forms, choreographed by both students, tutors and local professional choreographers. This is a reflection of the full and rich syllabus these students have been exposed to during the year, including improvisation, spoken word, ballet, Karate, acrobatics, theatre and film. A number of the choreographers are graduates of the Hagley program. [more]

RETHINK POSSIBLE WORLDS at Galatos
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 16 Oct 2011
Well padded and full
It would be too simplistic to call reTHINK Possible Worlds a poetry recital. Drawing from the fields of poetry, performance, music, dance and film, this elegant work asks the question, as its by-line, “Who are you in the maze of life?” [more]

THE BONE FEEDER at TAPAC - The Auckland Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 11 Nov 2011
Refreshing comedic moments in universal story
The story is quite simple. A young man, Ben (Kevin Ng), goes to the Hokianga to find the bones of his dead great-grandfather, Kwan (Gary Young), to take them back to China, as a promise to Ben’s dead father. Ben is ‘befriended’ (in the loosest sense of the word) by a local Maori ferryman (Rob Mokaraka). Kwan and his cohorts are all ghosts, having died 110 years earlier on the ill-fated ship, the SS Ventnor. [more]

KINGDOM OF CARDS (TASHER DESH) at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 25 Nov 2011
A play to make you smile
I was certainly looking forward to this. The Prayas Theatre Company has been around for six years now and is New Zealand’s leading Indian drama company; one which attempts to break out from, in its own words, “stereotypical compartmentalisation – mystic spirituality, exotic curries and Bollywood glamour.” [more]

EIDOLON at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 12 Mar 2012
Adventurous eloquence and eeriness
It is difficult to consider a piece which is fifty minutes of cello playing with visuals projected on three areas around the cellist to be ‘theatre’ in its traditional sense. However, when we consider that an instrument well played has character and personality and music well organised has a storyline, we do find many of the elements of theatre. [more]

THE GLASS MENAGERIE at Uxbridge Centre, 35 Uxbridge Road, Howick
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 13 Mar 2012
Short on dynamics if you know your Williams
In short, the cast needs to push the differences and absurdities of interrelationships more, but they seem to hold back and give us a ‘nicer’ storyline. [more]

WHY IS EVERYBODY SO FULL OF TECHNIQUE? at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 25 Jul 2012
Quaint
This story has a whacky premise. Pope Silverius (an actual sixth-century pope) is under seige from Empress Theodora (an actual Byzantine empress and wife of Justinian I). The two are at loggerheads over various issues, including that of monophysetism versus dyophysetism (whether Christ had one nature or two). Sounds riveting? Actually, it is hilarious. [more]

AOTEAROA – FOUND IN TRANSLATION at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 20 Mar 2013
Entertaining insights into cultural adaptation inconsistently delivered
I am highly impressed by the collection of poems and snippets delivered as Aotearoa - Found In Translation. Whoever selected them has a keen eye (or ear) for consistency and continuity. The subject is definitely that of coming to a new land and being a part of this place called ‘Aotearoa’. [more]

FOOTNOTE FORTE SERIES 2013 - WE HAVE BEEN THERE at Suter Theatre
reviewed by Janet Whittington 16 Apr 2013
Fresh and fascinating
The increasing tension and movement matched the music, seemingly especially written for this dance piece by Andrew Thomas. This did not adhere to traditional timing but also evolved and subsided, not with instrumental sound but electronic and machinery based rhythms, again reminiscent to me of a decades old album. This time of Brian Eno’s only album Fripp & Eno. [more]

THE MERIDIAN SEASON OF AURORA'S WEDDING 2011 at CBS Canterbury Arena
reviewed by Toby Behan (NZ Ballet's dancers warmly congratulated by Christchurch audince) 17 Nov 2011
Slendid triple bill warmly received by Christchurch
The choreography of A Song in the Dark, the dancers performing it, and the organisation of the Royal NZ Ballet represents something for us all to be immensely proud of as New Zealanders. [more]
