ROGER HALL’S ALADDIN : THE PANTOMIME at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 5 Nov 2007
If it doesn’t quite scintillate, it sparkles
Saturday night’s Fortune audience was demographically surprising, the median age being much closer to 39 than 9. But hey, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a pantomime, and Roger Hall’s Aladdin, directed by Douglas Kamo, combines material aimed squarely at the littlies with jokes designed to sail right over children’s heads and keep the adults entertained. Light-hearted festive fun
The revival is littered with such up-to-date topical jokes, including clever connection between oil and Tauranga (and, tangentially, Winston Peters), a pointed Terry Serepisos gag and various references to rugby (remember when that was at the centre of our universe?). [more]

Impressive magic among the gags
Not much has changed in Roger Hall’s Aladdin since it first appeared at Circa in 2006, though its geography has got even more confusing than I remember. [more]

Out of the bottle
Roger Hall’s Aladdin has plenty to entertain, including some very funny gags featuring John Key, Winston Peters and the Rugby World Cup. The show is fast paced and broad with a lot of audience participation, which the capacity crowd entered into with great gusto. [more]

Festive flummery
Perfect Christmas holiday fare. Of course there should be snow with coloured lights twinkling in the early dark, but who, young or old, can resist the charm of pantomime even on a warm summer evening? Certainly not Dunedinites, who are flocking to this good-humoured and polished production of Roger Hall’s Cinderella. [more]

A rattling good family show
There is a fresh feel about this Cinderella: lively script, topical gags, gorgeous music, clever and bright costume-set-lighting designs, and strong characterisations from an exemplary cast who connect well with each other and their audience. [more]

Cinderella with modern twist lots of fun for all the family
However Hall has added much that is modern, such as the Fairy Godmother’s wand which is an iPhone, with many local Wellington references such as the Cuba Mall Bucket Fountain, the buses down Willis Street, the opening of the Hobbit movie and of course the Mayor and her bicycle. [more]

Cinders glows but lacks sizzle
This Circa production of Roger Hall’s renovated Cinderella, directed by Susan Wilson, is performed by a cast of nine with a plush red curtain set and wacky costume designs by Paul Jenden, who also staged the musical sequences and wrote the lyrics to musical director and solo musician Michael Nicholas Williams’ delightful compositions. Homegrown pantomime a great treat
It's quite the best, if small-scale, panto seen in Wellington since the glory days of Wellington Repertory's pantos with David Tinkham as a fruity dame. [more]

Cinderella awes audience
Cinderella The Pantomime is perfect Xmas fare - (oh no it isn't, oh yes it is!). It's full of magic and music and ugly sisters ready to stab poor old Cinders in the back (look out behind you!). [more]
