AROUND THE WORLD AND BUCK AGAIN at CAPITAL E, McKenzie Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 12 Apr 2012
Canine antics make for rip-roaring kids' show
Buck was the hero of Capital E’s hit The Farm at the End of the Road and he’s back after going abroad to some sheepdog trials, but he’s in quarantine with three other dogs all waiting to be allowed into New Zealand. His companions are Fifi, a poodle from France, Horatio, a bulldog from England, and Dolores, a chihuahua from Mexico. [more]

AROUND THE WORLD AND BUCK AGAIN at Capital E - return season

A rich and entertaining experience all round
Just as Jenny’s script captures their diversity with concise observations and wit in their dialogue and behaviour, and Laughton’s music brilliantly evokes their different cultural backgrounds, so the actors bring wonderfully observed characterisations and attention to detail to their performances. ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at Court One

To cheer a winter evening
Like apple pie and favourite old-time tunes, some plays are simply too good to be left behind. As a sort of comfort food for theatre goers they bring reminders of what now seem more innocent times when there were still manners to make comedy of. So it is with Arsenic and Old Lace, a delirious romp through the secrets and preoccupations of an old established Brooklyn family, allowing pot shots en route at all manner of institutions and social expectations. Arsenic, old lace and plenty of laughs
I reviewed this play six years ago and found it funny. I found it even funnier last night. This says a lot for a nearly 70-year-old play which, stylistically and thematically, is clearly a work of its own day. [more]

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at Court One

Pure poison, pure farce
The Court’s production of Joseph Kesselring’s classic farce Arsenic and Old Lace is a delight. Farce, and the blacker the better, is what director Ross Gumbley does best, and he’s chosen well with this comedy and its satisfying blend of sweet and sour. Although Arsenic and Old Lace has its roots tangled deeply in the screwball comedy tradition of door-slamming and mistaken identities, it’s also well skewered with irreverence and mockery. [more]

ART BY FUNNY PEOPLE at Thistle Hall
reviewed by Hannah Smith 8 May 2013
Draw your own conclusions
Art by Funny People is something a bit different in the comedy festival: a gallery display of art works by comedians (or at least those affiliated with the world of comedy) with a nightly half hour performance by some of the comedic artists involved. [more]

That was some enchanted evening!
A perfect mix of nature, design machination, and art. [more]

AS YOU LIKE IT at Botanical Gardens: The Dell

The power of love and forgiveness
Trumpeted as the natural home of Summer Shakespeare, The Dell – and this year’s production, As You Like It – stood up to a rigorous test at the Sunday afternoon performance. Despite a large party of picnickers having no idea how much their chatter intruded, and despite being directly under the flight path of jets and helicopters, The Dell’s acoustics and the cast’s vocal projection proved equal to the challenge. Clear summer’s day in The Dell
With pigeons looking for crumbs from picnickers lying on the ground in front of the stage and with a lone morepork calling in the nearby bush in the calm summer’s evening it was easy to be transported to the Forest of Arden and Shakespeare’s enigmatic pastoral vision where people ‘fleet the time carelessly, as they did in the golden world’. Nice light Shakers
The 2007 Summer Shakespeare season brings us a suitably appropriately seasonal comedy in As You Like It. [more]
