A populist play with political bite The broad ‘commedia Pasifika’ humour we have come to know and love since, through Pacific Underground offshoots The Naked Samoans, Bro Town, etc, permeates the tragic-comic tale of star-crossed lovers Tusi Ai’u and Anaru Heke. Their respective PI and Maori mothers are equally prejudiced against the other culture, and ‘coconut v kumera’ comedy carries the message with alacrity. [more] |

Nothing in her performance is wasted The show relies on a thinking audience familiar with popular culture, but not overly so. Witty, irreverent, surreal Teodor Surcel and Anna McPhail were as complementary a pair as you would wish as the titular duo. He seemed the “straight man” with an inquisitive nature, she the one with all the answers. [more] |

Cheap laughs seriously under threat Eli Kent’s debut play Rubber Turkey is perfectly placed in the Comedy Festival to interrogate the whole idea of the joke, which he does with ingenious flair. Chicken little There are six main types of laughter, a man in a chicken suit explains at the start of Rubber Turkey – starting at the snicker. Darkly witty, superbly constructed Rubber Turkey is a slit-your-wrists-sharp comedy about comedy that tickles your cerebral cortex as well as your funny bone. Actually, I can’t tell if it’s a tragedy masquerading as a comedy or the other way around. “All the best comedy is born of tragedy” (and vice versa), explains Guy (Alex Grieg) – I guess therein lies my answer. The pitfalls of a disaffected creative exec “Hello, my name is Ruben Guthrie and I’m in advertising”; scene one line one has the title character introducing himself at his initial 12 steps support group meeting. With all his nervous fidgeting and snappy talk, Ruben’s like someone we’ve all met – at the far end of youth, a success story in the vice-ridden world of promotional media, tried everything twice and beginning to show the strain.
