CHARM IS NOT ENOUGH at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 28 May 2009
More buffet than banquet
Here we go again on the devised theatre* debate; specifically, its tendency to produce shows that suffer from premature performance syndrome ... The premise is fine: “The liberation army has disbanded,” a media release announces. “Feminism was ‘just a phase’. In the aftermath of Revolution has anything changed?” [more]

LAST LAUGH 09 at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Joanna Davies 25 May 2009
The spirit of great comedy is alive and kicking in NZ
It may be the International Comedy Festival but last night was New Zealand’s night. And what better way to wrap up the month’s laugh fest than with some awards? [more]

JIM BROWN - A LEGEND IN HIS OWN BATHWATER at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Venus Stephens 24 May 2009
A high note to end on
Jim Brown: teller of jokes, rouser of emotions and unlikely highlight of a Hens’ party. The spotlight is on him and he bathes the hour with his comical musings on everything from car repairs, a noted accreditation on paper and the old age side effect of not eating your greens. [more]

STOMP '09 at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Natalie Dowd 24 May 2009
A concoction of precision and focus
The action begins slowly, as one character pushes in a broom, drawing us in immediately with his expression and looking out at us, the broom tapping sotto voce. As each cast member joins him on stage in a series of grunts and “e-op!” greetings and “kia ora”, we are introduced to the working world where rhythm is king. [more]

DANNY BHOY – ON TOUR 2009 at Opera House
reviewed by Simon Sweetman (The Dominion Post) 23 May 2009
Still some laughs on slippery slope
... with this show Bhoy seems to be playing it straighter; simpler. When he leaves a story to disappear off on a tangent he never really makes it back, the basic greeting with three people in the front row is pretty much left there, whereas, on previous visits he would have run with that ... DANNY BHOY – ON TOUR 2009 at Opera House
reviewed by Sally Richards 23 May 2009
Constant laughs from a lovely man
With a gruelling three-month regional tour of Australia just behind him, Bhoy is remarkably fresh and energetic. It’s his third time in New Zealand and he’s got a good handle on the Kiwi idiosyncrasies and our Australian counterparts’ peculiarities. He takes the complete piss out of the Kiwi accent ... [more]

2009 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at Opera House
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 23 May 2009
Voyages of exploration
This programme of 7 short works showed the company in good form as they tour to several centres, helping to mark New Zealand Music Month. [more]

2009 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at Opera House
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 23 May 2009
A deep and fecund mulch
Footnote Dance Company’s Made in New Zealand programme is an important event on the annual dance calendar; there is always a warm buzz in the Wellington Opera House as the occasion unfolds. This is a testament to the stoic web of relationships that the company and Deirdre Tarrant have built with their ‘home’ crowd over the years. [more]

ROCKET! at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Sian Robertson 23 May 2009
Disorganised, disagreeing … and overly apologetic
Rocket! takes you through the twelve steps to becoming a boxing world champion, so you too can make your dream come true. After all, who doesn’t harbour a secret desire to be a pro at punching people’s lights out? [more]

PULP WILLIAM at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Nik Smythe 22 May 2009
Skilled pastiche of bluster and fury
Three plucky young actors don suits a la Reservoir Dogs and vernaculars a la the Immortal Bard, to regale a wanting assemblage of spectators with a twisted tale of intrigue and scandal. Directed by Greg Cooper, the Court Jesters of Christchurch – Daniel Bain, Brendon Bennetts and Javier Jarquin – skilfully weave a convoluted pastiche of bluster, fury and ingenious improvised comedy.
