Dealing with destiny What threatens at the outset to be a nihilistic discourse on the meaning of life is soon redeemed by some lush dancing, inspired by Taoist wisdom concerning the real strength that lies behind the apparent softness of acceptance and acquiescence. [more] |

Small ugly people have no rights? While Theatre Beating’s radical reworking of the classic Brothers Grimm tale plays out in Auckland under the title Rumplestilts, Wellington’s Kapital Kids Theatre offers a relatively straight upbeat adaptation of Rumpelstiltsken [sic]. [more] |

A good yarn spun with inventive twists Entertainment has to rank way up there in priorities for holiday fun theatre and this is where the production scores very well. Playing to a capacity house of eagle-eyed and honest little punters, the cast zip through the story with sparkle to spare. [more] |

Run, Slip and Spring, Q Theatre But gone are the warm fuzzies of a cute community dance collective - and the heartfelt rapport. The Doing of Dance I think it is important to briefly acknowledge the accomplishment of this company, as they have survived and continue to thrive at the ripe old age of fifteen. That’s ancient in New Zealand dance company years! The visibility this company has created for the validity of ‘all bodies’ expression within (and outside of) the NZ professional dance sector is remarkable. So, sending out many thanks to Catherine Chappell and company members past and present for your work and contribution to changing attitudes and lives through dance in NZ. [more] |

Sincerity, curiosity and ingenuity drive theatrical experiment It deals with death and grief –not only the grief of the living, but also of the dead, because it’s the kind of ghost story where the dead have to work out their issues in what the play refers to as an “in-between” state before they can move on to… well, who knows? A slice of life, but not as we know it Ellie Smith’s debut play is the sort of work we might have expected to find in an edge-of-London back-alley venue around the mid 1960s. Why not, given it’s about street people discarded by ‘social progress’ who have in no way kept up with the times despite their plastic-strewn environment. [more] |
