Nice light Shakers
The 2007 Summer Shakespeare season brings us a suitably appropriately seasonal comedy in As You Like It. [more]

ASHES TO ASHES & ONE FOR THE ROAD at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 10 Sep 2006
Brutal truth rewarding
Harold Pinter. I’d forgotten how affecting his well-chosen words could be. While to the uninitiated, a Pinter play can be difficult to digest ... any chance to see this playwright’s work done well, is highly recommended. [more]

ASIAN TALES™: NATIVE ALIENZ at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Jessie Kollen 13 Feb 2009
Life is simply very complicated
Here is a collection of plays that as individual pieces and as a whole capture an idea that is at the heart of human experience: life is at once very simple and yet very complicated, individual and yet communal; we can be desperately lonely and yet inextricably connected to one another. [more]

Poignant flavour to seven appetisers of home-grown Asian theatre
At the beginning of this evening of seven Asian dramas, a Japanese man wearing a traditional haori jacket, Hiroshi Nakatsuji, welcomes the audience with a mihi, in well-accented te reo. [more]

ASSASSINS at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Joanna Davies 25 Jul 2010
Integrity in sensational staging
This slick mélange of carnival, freak-show and history lesson tells stories of frustration, despair and single-minded will as it follows the nine assassins and would-be assassins who plot the murders of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford and Reagan. [more]

Drop dead and pretty bloody gorgeous
Actor/assassin John Wilkes Booth might have killed Abraham Lincoln because he earned bad reviews but – spoiler alert! – our national leaders won't get shot because of what you're reading now. [more]

It’s like a present I cannot open
‘Fourth wall’ theatre is alive and, well, present in a very literal sense, at Bats. Cling film shrouds all four walls of the stage but the one we face is mercifully clear. Within its confines 20 young people … exist. Hermetically sealed, as it were. [more]

A work in progress
Devised works can be a mixed bag and while often they give the opportunity for a cast and director and sometimes writers to explore issues and themes in a collaborative way the process of getting to the final product is often more productive than the product itself. [more]

AT THE WAKE at Centrepoint
reviewed by Richard Mays 30 Jul 2012
Insightful, compelling and humorous piece about life, love and loss
“That bastard dog shit on the front lawn again!” And with these opening words we are introduced to the formidable ‘dame’ Joan, a 70-years (plus) peroxided (former) bombshell, and chief (so she reckons) mourner at the funeral of her daughter, Olivia. [more]

A fine new play
Funerals and the brouhaha surrounding them typically bring people together who’ve not met for yonks – but what if they’ve had powerful reasons for staying far apart? Chuck into the mix the boozing that's characteristic of a wake, leading on to the freeing-up of the voicing of grievances, grudges and ugly truths, and here comes trouble. [more]
