Tempo Dance Festival 2012
SEAMLESS at Q Theatre, Rangatira
reviewed by Jesse Quaid 21 Oct 2012
A couple of charmers
There is a darker side to this exploration of relationships, shadowy figures abound and happiness seems unattainable. A man eats chocolates from a box while the pair demonstrate falling in love. He eats, mechanically, compulsively as if the sweets will make everything alright. They don’t. He leaves. The emotional variations are shown to us but never deeply investigated. The music enhances this feeling, always apt, but never unexpected. At the end the spotlights slowly fade on each performer, returning them to darkness. It is a sombre note, although the final image is a boy and a girl, perched on the box seat, sharing a kiss. [more]

SEASONS at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 27 Apr 2013
Fresh and inspiring delights
It’s the concept of a year – because they only get together once a year, for the summer holidays – that generates their evocation of the four seasons, through a combination of song, dance, puppetry and play. [more]

Aimed at 2-7 year-olds, Seasons has no plot but a trip through the four seasons held together by imaginative use of puppetry, songs, pleasing performers and high quality presentation. [more]

An intelligent, well designed, and mightily fun learning experience
Seasons is one of the oldest shows in Capital E’s repertoire (first performed in 2000), but it sure is a goodie. This is one exceptionally energetic, educational and enthralling show. [more]

SECONDARY COLOURS at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Barbara Snook 21 Oct 2012
The future of dance is in good hands
The title ‘Secondary Colours’ suggested that the items would be from Secondary Schools and while six schools were involved in the programme, there was a assortment of work that included dance from studios and youth companies, creating a rich mix. Variety was also evident with the choreographers, ranging from students to professionals. The works themselves were all worthy of inclusion in the programme. [more]

SECRETS at Gryphon

Real depths of emotion mined
Director Bobbi Block introduces Secrets as “spontaneous, reality based, serio-comic theatre”. Although this is a bit of mouthful, the show does deliver on all of these components. [more]

SEE? at Lakeside Court, Hamilton Gardens

Unclear out of context
See? Unfortunately I didn’t. I thought this play was about a murderer having to atone to God for his sins. [more]

SELF PORTRAIT at BATS
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (The Dominion Post) 18 Feb 2009
Celebrating a seminal artist
Self Portrait, four solos inspired by Rita Angus, was an impressive response to Gaylene Preston’s striking documentary of the artist’s life. The three dancers shared a strong opening frame, then each performed a solo in response to a selected self-portrait by Angus, exploring the image for particular resonances in their own lives. [more]

Self-portraits of an artist danced
Self Portrait features four artists’ responses to individual works of the Rita Angus. We view a two fold response from Katie Burton to the drawing Composition with Self- Portrait, 1937 and to Rita’s life at that time in Christchurch. Katie dances an abstract solo full of rises, falls, of balances and suspended moments ... [more]

SELF PORTRAIT at BATS

From the ennui of jazz-age youth to unresolved inner conflict
An intriguing premise – the inspiration to create dance works and a film from the iconic Rita Angus self-portraits – forms the basis for Self Portrait, from Auckland’s Corrupt Productions Company. [more]
